Our gift guide provides lots of ways to give back. So does the ABC Home and Planet Foundation. Givers can choose among sixteen specialized gift packages priced from $40 to $1000, supporting efforts ranging from Dr. Wangari Maathai's Green Belt Movement International to Maya Rainforest protection, to Pet Rescue New York City. The recipient gets a sweet, embroidered silk pouch fashioned from a vintage sari along with a “Gift of Compassion” certificate fully describing the offering made on her or his behalf. Gifts of Compassion may be purchased at ABC Carpet & Home's landmark retail venue in New York on Broadway at 19th Street, or online. ABC via Erin

The FAQ for ABC says, "Up to 30% of the funds raised in the Gifts of Compassion initiative will be used to pay a portion of our costs associated with the initiative."

Thirty percent! Thirty percent!

Network for Good charges 4.75% and http://www.ChangingThePresent.org charges just 3% and 30 cents. Why would TreeHugger support something that takes so much of my donation dollar?

Let us not forget the importance of economic sustainability--
I also wondered about this percentage and after some investigation found out that ABC's purpose provides a platform for small lesser-known visionary organizations that are doing exceptional work around the world!

As a very happy customer of the Gifts of Compassion Program, I am impressed by ABC's thorough system of accountability with these organizations so that the gifts I buy-- whether it's 9 months of private math/lit classes for a girl in Afghanistan or 100 planted trees-- go directly to providing that service.

What distinguishes ABC from Network for Good is that the recipient doesn't just receive an email letter. The Gift of Compassion presentation is actually STUNNING-- a recycled sari bag, a beautiful card describing the purpose of the foundation and a personalized acknowledgment that describes the gift.

My friends are even considering working with ABC to design beautiful and meaningful wedding favors, that actually take action in the world.

Good work, treehugger, in highlighting ABC's awesome work.
