Electrum Spyder Launch at AltCar Expo

by Christine Lepisto, Berlin on 12. 9.06
Business & Politics

spyder3.jpg The Electrum Spyder will be unveiled this weekend at the AltCar Expo in Santa Monica, California. Look for the car, which will be produced in limited series, to go on sale at the Universal Electric Vehicle Corporation web site after the vehicle launch. The sleek two-seater hardtop convertible with electric motor is priced at $69,995 and is claimed to go 0-60 in under 5 seconds.

According to EV watch the prototype relies on a 112 HP duel motor rear wheel drive system that reaches top speeds of 80 mph. The motor can cover 300 miles on a single charge with the Lithium battery upgrade or 150 miles on the standard nickel zinc batteries.

The Electrum Spyder is built from polyester fiberglass composite on a steel chassis. Double A arm suspension, coil over shocks, and rack and pinion steering assure a smooth and responsive ride. Interlocks ensure the car cannot be powered up when the driver is not in the driver's seat, handy if you are the type that needs a jump at the end of a long day in the office because you forgot your headlights. The charger is available in 100v or 220v and a charge time of 2-8 hours is specified. 20 vehicles will be available in the beta run.

TreeHuggers in the Santa Monica area can drop in to the AltCar Expo at the Santa Monica Air Center, Barker Hanger on Dec 9th & 10th, 2006, admission is free.

AltCar expo was last month.

They're going to be quite disappointed when they arrive from Berlin and find that out.
