This Bumper Sticker is Absolutely Necessary
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 11.26.06

I often feel guilty (and a bit hypocritical) driving my car when I could have walked or biked, knowing that it is bad for my carbon footprint. I feel so much better now that I have this bumper sticker from the Guardian that TreeHugger Bonnie sent me from London.

Perhaps it's just your wording, but can you confirm that you just said that you feel better about driving your car when you could have walked or biked, because of a bumper sticker?
Very cool! I can go days without driving my car, and feel fortunate to be able to walk my daughter to school.
Political correctness means always having to say you're sorry.
how is this cool? The only place this could be used on in an ecocological note is an emergency wheehicle. Everywhere else it just looks sarcastic.
yes, I agree....very sarcastic in it's tone. I imagine people who drive Hummers would enjoy having this sticker on their cars/trucks/behemoths and feel good about themselves.
This could work on a rental car or one of those car-share program cars. I gave my car up nine years ago. I rent a few times a year--that motivates me to drive only when I really really need to. Great way to cut down your driving. Oh, and get a bike trailer.
OK - it's about context. A) it's British, so that means it's ironic. B) It's from the Guardian, so that means it's post-modern. So what you have is post-modern irony, a form well understood over here but which looses something in the translation. To translate: "I know I shouldn't be driving this car, but I am. The joke is made by me against me as I portray myself as the kind of un-reconstructed petrol-head who would say something like that." Imagine Randy Newman is singing it before Disney stole his soul.
Hope that helps ;O)
