Origami Sailing

new%20origami.jpg It's a flat-pack, DIY, lightweight and--a sailboat--made using the ancient japanese art of origami. This little dinghy was designed as a prototype by Matteo Signorini when he was a design student; his inspiration was the paper boats that float on water. It is a little revolutionary in its design- It is 10 feet long, carries one adult, and folds up into a flatpack, the same size as a surfboard, so it is easily transported and stored. Made out of corrugated plastic, it is easy to manufacture and fold up. The materials aren't perfect, but the benefits are manifest: boating becomes accessible to landlubbers and students. The cost, lightness and speed of entry mean more people can enjoy the wonders of sailing. :: Matteo Signorini

Nice design. I love ingenious alternatives like this. Reminds me a little of the Porta-Bote: http://www.portableboat.com/

Cool! Now how about an origami kayak as well? One that I could carry on my bike, without needing a special kayak trailer for my bike!
