Oprah Wants to Know about Your Global Warming Concerns

It's been just over a year since Oprah Winfrey had Leonardo DiCaprio and Dr. Michael Oppenheimer on her show to discuss climate change. Apparently, Oprah and co. aren't finished with this important topic, as the "Be On the Show" section of Oprah.com lists two global warming-themed questions (" Are you worried about global warming?" and " Is your family worried about global warming?" ) on the "Upcoming Shows" roster. A reader need only click on the linked questions and fill out the form, and s/he could find her or himself on the way to Chicago as a guest of the Oprah Winfrey Show.

We can't think of a group of people more prepared to answer these questions than Treehugger readers, so we encourage you to tell your story at Oprah.com. Let Oprah know that not only are you and your family concerned, but that you're also taking concrete steps to lessen your own carbon footprint. More than likely, you've even got good ideas about how we can address the climate crisis at the local, national and international levels. When you send your information to Oprah's people, we'd really (really!) appreciate it if you mentioned that you learned about these potential shows at Treehugger. ::"Be On the Show" at Oprah.com

Your mention of Leonardo DiCaprio’s appearance with Dr. Michael Oppenheimer on the Oprah show last year reminds me that, in one segment, they discussed eco-friendly ways we can all make small changes in our personal purchasing habits in order to help the environment.

A group of products notably missing from their discussion –- and ones I believe would be of great interest to all eco-conscious women -- are environment-friendly menstrual products.

The truth is that disposable feminine hygiene products have disastrous effects on the environment.

According to most estimates, the average woman uses nearly 12,000 disposable tampons and/or pads during her menstruating lifetime. And these tampons and pads – just like the 49 million disposable diapers foisted daily upon the environment – wreak havoc on our land.

One answer: Reusable menstrual products! There are several varieties, including reusable organic cotton menstrual pads and reusable menstrual cups. For instance, The Keeper, which has been on the market since 1987, is a reusable menstrual cup which is made of natural gum rubber. With proper care, one Keeper can last up to 10 years. Now, that’s an option that’s easy on the environment AND cost-effective! The company has also recently introduced a medical-grade silicone version of The Keeper, called the Moon Cup.

For more information about both products, please visit the manufacturer’s website, www.keeper.com. And feel free to write to me at thekeeper1987@aol.com.

I wonder whether Oprah would be willing to discuss alternative menstrual products on this upcoming show.

Thanks much for all your hard work. I absolutely love Treehugger.com.

Honestly, I'm pretty happy they *didn't* mention disposable menstrual products. Frankly, I can't think of something more likely to turn off the average Oprah viewer than the mental image of a 10-year-old sanitary napkin, no matter how inaccurate the image might be.

And while I agree that there is a problem with diapers and pads/tampons entering the waste stream, solving that problem isn't likely to have the same impact as convincing someone to not buy an SUV or to buy energy efficient appliances. You'd likely scare away more people who could have otherwise made a huge difference than you'd get converts to your product. Let's not lose the fence sitters by hitting them over the head with the final 20% solutions right from the start, please.

Writer's note: isa (and others) -- you'll need to do this in the "Tell Us Your Story" field, as you're right -- there's no field specifically for listing a referral... glad you applied, regardless... good luck!

I've been using them for six years and watch Oprah often. I was rather disappointed with the last show with the good Dr. and the good movie star. Some of the simplest solutions were left out and they are generally not done by the public because people just forget. Things like reusable shopping bags for all shopping, modern cloth diapers (I used for my kids too)as well as the reusable feminine products, and the basic R-R-R, were sort of left out of the picture or barely mentioned. Personally, I'd like to see some solutions that keep in mind the lack of $$ that we parents are some times up against so that more families can participate in the better life solution. I can do these things now, but I'm honestly a bit worried as to how I'm supposed to keep it up when I go back to school with two kids in school and a hubby that's getting his MBA and working full time to boot. Suggestions are most welcome.

oprah, queen of the diets, should come up with one where all her viewers can shed a few tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions off of their fat couch potato asses

I have NO concerns about "global warming", because it's a hoax and a lie. Just a decade or so ago, "they" (the leftist elites) were trying to scare us with "global cooling" - no kidding, you can look it up. When that didn't bring hysteria, and money into the coffers, they "discovered" "global warming". No credible scientists sign on to this ridiculous theory, but many idiots scramble to explain why every weather event and falling temps "really mean" that global warming is going to gobble us all up. It's a fairy tale, folks. Forget it, and just try to live like civilized humans.

Wow indeed [re: glibal climat = hoax]

Global warming isn't happening? So why are the indians in the Andes seeing snow disappear from their mountains? Why is kilimanjaro's snow cap almost gone? I can't believe there are still some uneducated fools making comments like that. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that global warming is happening.

And as to the comment 'let's try live like civilized humans": Tell me, dear reader, do you think we have infinite landfills? Do you think earth can get rid of all the toxins we spew out into air, land and water? Of course, give it thousands of years and it might, but not anytime soon.
What is wrong with living in balance and harmony with the nature? How is that uncivilized?

Your comments are fantastic - it's almost like science fiction

The Earth is flat. Spherical Earth Theory is just a hoax perpetuated by greedy liberal nonprofits and hate-religion "scientists" at the behest of the secret UN cabal scheming to establish a one-world Socialist Totalitarian State.

It's true! Michael Savage told me!

Well where to start would be more to the question,my step grandmother asked me when will I have kids,my reply not in this lifetime if global warming is to take effect withen 50 years,I am too afraid there wont be much on offer for them is this unrealistic.
I think it will be up to big corporations to make a difference eg:Billionares and millionares unite to create greener power staions if they foot the intiall costs then people would sign up also using the allure of investment stratedgy eventually making more money back than the intiall costs it makes sense to me that the push for a cleaner greener earth should come from the private sector. Not only would the public support come flowing through but would give support for future political ventures should these poential creators and saviours may endevour.
Thank you for taking the time to read this apllication, much love kelly manning.

How much Carbon dioxide has Al Gore contributed to "global warming: by giving speeches? Talking releases COP@ How much in travel t sites to gie anti-aAmerican speeches? I am sure he dies not bicycle from place to place. After all his Tennessee "home was given his father by a major oil compnay.

Al Gore is able to command media attention to the plight of global warming in an arena that most of us don't have access to. By reaching out to the general american audience through shows like Oprah, he has the ability to reach millions of people and educate them about global warming. These are people that may not have otherwise paid attention to the issue. If each viewer watching the show takes the initiative to live more "green" the ripple effect could be tremendous which would minimize the impact of any negative contribution on Mr. Gore's part. Face it, it is corporate america that endangers us all with their greed and ignorance to the effects of global warming. Let's give Mr. Gore some kudo's for being a voice in the wilderness unafraid to speak out against his counterparts.

dont worry ... al gore offsets ... he's the leader of team america ... f*ck yeah!

Does anyone have any idea when Oprah decided that she wanted a family to come on about global warming?

I just want those thinking of purchasing the Moon Cup from the Keeper Inc to know that if you have questions about its use (beyond what was provided when you received the package), you will be met w/ no assistance. Calling or emailing for assistance will get you nowhere. Returning the item (and having proof of it) will not necessarily get you a "guaranteed refund." So buyer be aware!
