Dagoba Sold To Hershey's

This isn't exactly breaking news, but seems worth bringing up as the season of treats closes in. In October word spread that, like Scharffen Berger before it, Dagoba had been sold to Hershey's. By most reports little seems to have changed at Scharffen Berger so far, but it's hard to feel like Dagoba is the same Dagoba, isn't it? We've loved it, loved it some more, potentially been poisoned by it, and gone back to loving it. Here's hoping the changes take root slowly. Read founder Frederick Schilling's thoughts and the animated discussion that follows at chocolate expert David Lebovitz's world renowned food blog. ::

Great. a good chocolate company sold to another who makes sub par chocolate. Just what we need.

Only a few years ago Hersey was engaged in a very public debate over whether the Board should sell out to some international group of financiers, abandoning it's roots to the community where it started. Some sort of stop gap solution was eventually found at the urging of government officials. I just hope they don't have their all their profit hopes in the single basket of organic product margins, because if they do the day will come soon when sellout comes back on the table.

Why do the ewoks like chocolate? Hersey, PA is pretty cool.

ewoks lived on endor. yoda was on dagoba.
all the selling out breaks my heart. i stopped using tom's because i don't want colgate to have my money...now this? the single-source bars are so yummy. how long will they survive?

This is probably a good thing, as Dagoba had significant safety and quality problems, as they were shipping highly contaminated chocolate for 6 months before thet realized it. Most responsible companies do continuous testing. I have no love for Dagoba after I gave my entire family lead poisoning last Christmas from their product. All my nieces and nephews tested positive for lead poisoning, and I feel very bad being the cause of this. When I contacted Dagoba they were very rude and uncaring. A horrible company.
