Comfy Bikes Aimed At Commuters: Revolutionary!

The The Wall Street Journal reports: "A radical idea is sweeping the world of American bicycle manufacturing: building bikes that people will use for actual transportation. After decades of pushing models designed for recreation, from full-suspension mountain bikes to ever-faster road bikes, industry heavyweights are now moving into commuters — rugged specimens made for riding to work." Pictured here is the Currie iZIP Urban Cruiser Electric Bicycle, priced at $549. The article also mentions Specialized’s new Globe commuter line, Breezer's Uptown 8 series, and Electra’s new $550 Amsterdam commuter bikes. They say: "Nearly every major manufacturer has a new or revised commuter model for 2007. They may look like 1940s Schwinns, but materials like aluminum and carbon make the frames lighter, while technological advances mean better brakes, shock-absorbing seats, smoother shifters and even electric power."

Now just add a headlight, and it will be street legal and ready for serious commuting! Note that some "commuter" bikes aren't much more than cruiser bikes. While others are really well designed with all the standard equipment that you need for a safe and comfortable commute, such as built in generator lights, and racks/panniers, or at least braz-ons for attachning them.
How is it a commuter bike with no fenders?
I agree with the assessment that fenders are essential. One of the major reasons I do not like using my bike is the muddy stripe that forms on my back. Clearly these designs were not given appropriate usability testing by people who are serious about commuting.
someone please respond to this question.. does anyone else have a 404 error when trying to sign in to type key? and do any of the admins know whats going on?
Yes I get 404's when trying to use type key, it has been going on for a few weeks now. Quite frustrating and annoying.
As for fenders go buy some for $10 and put them on.
