Clif Bar's New Shot Bloks

You know how much we love Clif Bar. And when we read a blurb in the New York Times yesterday about their new Shot Bloks, we were definitely excited. Made, of course, from organic ingredients these new energy chews are perfect for excessive exercise. The nonsticky blocks are just 33 calories each and can sustain glucose levels for a two-hour run, hike or ride. The shots are easy to chew and simple to handle – just pop them in your mouth and off you go. We’ll definitely keep these in mind for next year’s backpacking adventure on Mt. Washington. Clif Bars are great, but doesn't this product just increase the ratio of packaging to product? How is that Treehuggerish?

that's a lot of packaging for 33 calories. how about part of a carrot or a glass of juice before the jog instead?

There are multiple blocks per package - I don't think it is as bad as it looks in terms of packaging/calories

They are exactly "new," I've been using them for over a year, but they are a big improvement over the taste and mess of their energy goo. The packaging is a bit overabundant, and is something they need to work on.

the product is mainstream, but manages to be organic and healthy. that seems like a treehugger product to me.

Why not wrap them in post-consumer recycled paper instead? Or sell them in bigger packages? Too much plastic...

Wow so much complaining, are treehuggers ever happy?

I'm just thinking that 33 calories is verra verra leetle.

I'm pretty sure you mean kilocalories, and even so, i don't understand why you list it as an advantage that an energy-chew has few calories. I would say the more the better. It's what you pay for, after all.

Better question: are trolls ever with other people on Friday nights?

i've been using them for over a year too, but these are new flavors (and maybe formulas?). the reason they are not bulk packed is that they are mainly sold for distance runners, cyclists etc. they are pretty much an alternative to the energy gels. the formulation is for consumption during strenuous exercise. there are 6 blocks per package and they recommend 3-6 per hour of exercise. the whole package is 200 calories. the package is small enough that i can carry them with me while running a marathon, or training for one. i can hide them along the course and know they will be ready when i hit that mark. Clif is one of the few companies in that market that makes their products vegan, so i appreciate that. i suppose a large container may be nice for on your desk or something, but these are intended for use while exercising. i'll have these with me next weekend when i run a marathon actually. as a vegan marathon runner i am psyched they exist.

These taste absolutely horrible!!! Do not buy - suitable only for culinary masochists!

This summer, these little buggers helped me ride from Seattle down to Portland and then later from Seattle up to Vancouver. I think they taste pretty good (for energy food) and, IIRC, you get eight in one pack.

If you’re into endurance activities I highly recommend shot blocks. I started eating energy gels [3] years ago in preparation for my 1st marathon. They did what I needed them to do, but like most people I found myself chocking them down as quickly as possible. Shot blocks come in a wide variety of flavors [Strawberry, Black Cherry, Cola] they taste great. In my opinion they are the best endurance supplement on the market. This past January I completed the Chevron Houston Marathon, and Clif’s shot blocks were a big part of my training and race day preparation...Hugg away my friend...
