Green Elements At BC Cancer Foundation's Research Building
by Justin Thomas, Virginia on 10.11.06

These are the unique circular windows at the BC Cancer Foundation's Research Building, which opened last year in Canada. The windows are 15-feet in diameter, and they have built-in ventilation shutters. They were inspired by petri dishes.

The 15-storey spiral staircase was designed to resemble the double helix form taken by DNA. The roof of the building is shaped like an amoeba.

The building is water efficient, and includes the use of waterless urinals. A quarter of the construction and finishing materials were from recycled sources, and are low-VOC. It has a LEED Canada Gold rating, more info here.

This is an interesting, innovative building. I love the petri-dish, shutter-window design. Nice post.
The staircase looks nice, but if I had to go more than a floor up or down I'd get seriously dizzy.
