With the aim of discovering why design matters, a social design network called Design21 has launched a series of competitions. Titled "Heated Issue," one such competition calls for entrants to design an awareness campaign to educate the public on the issue of global warming. This competition asks participants to create an educational campaign to raise public awareness of the problem of global warming and the contribution of our daily lifestyle and activities to this phenomenon. The aim of the campaign is to provoke people to think about the issue and how their individual consumer choices and energy consumption play into the equation. Four cash prizes, totaling $10,000, will be awarded to the winners, and the deadline to enter is Sunday, December 10. Design21 is a worldwide design network that seeks to promote design practice that is creative, thoughtful and responsible, so that good design becomes an integral part of everything we make, from objects and structures to environments and communities. Their goal is to form a global community that explores ways that design can make positive contributions to society and our environment. The non-profit organization SmartPower has joined forces with the internet giant YouTube to launch a similar contest. The Clean Energy Ad Challenge invites participants to create a 30-second television advertisement which promotes clean energy. The grand prize winner will be a part of their national television campaign and will receive a cash prize of $10,000. SmartPower and this competition joins the growing trend to motivate the public to express their views on the environment and clean energy use.

SmartPower is a national non-profit organization which promotes clean energy with the mission of having 20% of our energy supply coming from clean and renewable resources by the year 2010. The contest was recently launched on YouTube.com and is running through February 1, 2007.

Don't know how much that's going to actually "help", but I guess it's easier than getting a degree in chemical engineering or physics.

I'm glad to see someone out there funding this sort of competition. Getting people to change their behavior is an extremely part of helping to stop global warming before it is too late!
