Tomorrow is Feed the Birds Day--held when the clocks go back and winter nights begin. It's the time when birds and other wildlife need a little extra protection as the first frost looms. Giving some food, water and shelter helps them through the winter and provides a haven for wildife. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) suggests that the best foods are black sunflower seeds and peanuts, which can be put out all year round. Bird houses should be hung from branches, far away from where people are walking. Make sure that you can see them from your window, because that's half the fun. For the traditionalist , you will easily find good solid ones, made of approved wood, to attract small robins and wrens. These should only be cleaned at the end of the season, once the birds have left.
