TreeHugger Picks: Colleges Taking Eco-Action
by Collin Dunn, Corvallis, OR, USA on 10.11.06

Congratulations to the College of the Atlantic on their recent decision to go climate-neutral; we hope it be the first of many institutions of higher learning taking the pledge, though there are lots of good green things going on around other college campuses already. Here are some of our picks of college eco-action.
1) New York University just made the largest purchase of wind power by any U.S. college or university last week.
2) The University of Calgary's U-bike program allows students to ride around campus on shared bikes for free.
3) Both the University of Florida and Washington State University offer degrees in organic agriculture.
4) Farming not your thing? Have a look at our suggestions for where to study eco-design at the university level.
5) The University of British Columbia will be home to the Centre for Interactive Research for Sustainability; the "greenest building in North America" will be ready for occupancy in early 2008.

How about, also, SMU: Southern Methodist University's LEED engineering building . They're also looking to make some future student housing LEED green as well.
Also check out Worldwatch's great list of campuses that are taking action: http://www.worldwatch.org/taxonomy/term/458. I think you can still write in with stories about your own campus as well.
The University of Nevada,at their lake Tahoe summer camp has built an incredible new dorm,it will be the first Gold LEED building for the University in Nevada. As I was involved in the initial design and construction of the building the bottom line is the building they replaced was there for 75 years and they figured the lifespan of the new building would be just as long. The Building cost more initialy, but over the anticipated lifespan there was a HUGE savings in energy costs!Pictures on my website=www.zeropowerhouse.com
We are planning the 3rd annual Treehuggers Ball for May 19th,2007 in So Cal Orange County.
All proceeds go Sierra club fight against 4,000 homes poorly planned (no plan except to make$) plus the takeover of historic Irvine park to use for sewage removal.
We need help this year! Its coming up fast and we are still looking for keynote speakers/ celebrities/sponcership/ food/getting the word out and lots of general help.

Augustana College's Augie Green is looking for environmentally friendly customizable shirts. We want organic fabrics, but we don't know where to find them where they will fit our budget. Any ideas?
Hey Tom,
Try http://www.hemptown.com/ We are getting custom printed shirts made from bamboo fibers to promote the Earth Day Event on the U. Hawaii campus.
U. Hawaii is going green too with strong support from the interim chancellor. Checkout http://sustainablesaunders.hawaii.edu if you would like to find out more about what we are doing on campus.
