Velo-City in New York
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 09.13.06
We love Chris Hardwicke's Velo-City ideas for giving bicycles the same attention and investment in infrastructure that other more carbon-intensive transport systems get- this is how we will get around in Utopia. This month, New Yorkers can see his work at the Van Alen Institute in The Good Life: New Public Spaces For Recreation- an exhibition that explores the reinvention of urban public spaces to meet the needs of 21st century recreation. It features an international array of projects by Ábalos & Herreros, Acconci Studio, Adjaye/Associates, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Greyworld, Heatherwick Studio, Hood Design, SHoP Architects, Weiss/Manfredi, and West 8, among others. ::Van Alen Institute through October 1

Or how about a future city in which all automobile roads and carparking structures exist underground (we'd need lots of lifts!), and all above-ground paths are exclusively for walkers, bikers, powerchairs and the like?
