I’m embarrassed. I was sure we’d have mentioned Sustrans aeons ago. But a peek in the vast TH archives suggests not. A big slap on our wrists. Sustrans is in their own words “the UK's leading sustainable transport charity. Our vision is a world in which people can choose to travel in ways that benefit their health and the environment. Every day we are working on practical, innovative ways of dealing with the transport challenges that affect us all.” And you only have take a quick scan of their Useful Links page to see just how enthusiastic they are are about getting people the information they need. That many links that, in fact, you might never leave the house, clicking away to your hearts content, going, “Wow, look at this!”, or “Hey, that’s fantastic, I never knew there was cycle route along there.” Their biggest project, to date, has been the 10,000 miles (16,000 km) of the National Cycle Network that is said to run within 2 miles (3.2 km) of 75% of the British population and get used for 230 million journeys each year. This is apparently the nation's favourite project funded (in part) by the Government administered National Lottery. And if you thought a National Cycle Network was ambitious, you set you sights too low! In another program their aim “is to create a Safe Route to School for every child in the UK.” Their slick site is brimming with information, both on UK, and international sustainable transport projects.
