The scientists say that in order to prevent the global ecological catastrophe we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the range of 60-80% within a decade.

How will we achieve that kind of radical change in such a short period?

jump to top Manu Sharma says:

Global warming has been going on too long to turn around rapidly. Everything I have seen to turn around global warming costs a lot. I ride a bike most places and am vegan. Is there more I could do that could help and not cost me much $$.

Hi there,

There is a scenerio that has run through my head a few times recently where the world really gets its act together and begins to deal with Climate Change in a real way. There are 5 things that really need to happen in order for this to happen so that we can avert a catastrophe that goes way beyond Katrina and the droughts that we are seeing now in Asia and the U.S. SouthWest.

1. Germany and the E.U. continue to work domestically to reduce Carbon emissions but more importantly, they continue to work with China and indeed, they step up their efforts there.

2. The U.S. House and Senate goes Democrat in the fall of '06 and something of an Apollo mission for the U.S. to become energy independent through conservation and renewable energy development begins to take shape

3. Stephane Dion becomes leader of the Liberal Party, takes down Steven Harper in early '07 and shortly thereafter begins to work with the E.U. and China to drive down emissions.

4. Bush steps down before his term is finished in late '07 and a Real Democrat is elected. Bush et al., subsequently face charges for War Crimes in an international court but not until 2012. The U.S. then works with China, Canada and the E.U. to agressively drive down emissions

5. China goes green in a big way. Drives innovation in green technologies and processes and lowers the cost of these technologies.

What do you think?

What are your feelings about cattle farming and the huge impact industrialised meat production has on the environment?

Why is the NRDC backing E85 even though it is decidely ungreen, will not lead to energy independence and is a CAFE dodge for automakers?

I notice in "An Inconvenient Truth" no mention was made of France's successful drive to eliminate carbon dioxide completely from their electrical power grid. Since it's the only major industrialized nation that has done this, why not talk about it?

jump to top Jim Smith says:

In response to Jim Smith, the simple answer is that France has not eliminated carbon dioxide from their power grid. That's because nuclear power still requires fossil fuels for the mining, processing and transportation of uranium.

Hi,
I think that Americans have gotten to the point where most of us will admit that global warming is a problem and that something needs to be done about it. (Well, lets hope). People will say this but no one can really identify what that 'something' is. People I have talked to just point fingers and say 'oh, the government will figure it out' or 'oh, the big companies will figure it out'. But since most of us aren't in the government or big companies, just regular people, what should we be doing? I tend to get up on my soapbox and rant about how awful global warming is and how we are just destroying the environment, but if I don't have practical suggestions to make to my friends and family, I'm not being very effective. And I've learned that most people just aren't going to make changes that are expensive or require major inconviences (sadly enough). So could you suggest the things that I should be telling people to do?

jump to top Elizabeth says:

how many tonnes does laurie's personal greenhouse gas footprint amount to a year and how does she eliminate it? e.g. what car does she drive, where does her home(s) energy supply come from, where does she go on holiday, where does she buy her offsets etc ... thanks

jump to top captain greenpower says:

What happened to this interview? Are you going to do it?

editor note: It's done. It should be published soon in a couple of formats (audio, text).

Great. Thanks!

jump to top sig@zipa.com says:

The future looks green There is another choice to using food crop as fuel. As American's we all know that ethanol is worthless as fuel, However there is a light at the end of this tunnel, for this technology, is viable, 91 octane and could end the gun to America's head that has plagued us for over half a century FOREIGN OIL DEPENDENCE while also providing the added bonus of putting a dent in the terrorist pocketbook. While it's compatible with existing technology, under development now, implementaion is a few still years away, it is possibility our best bet to have our gas and burn it too. Cost is in millions, not Billions as some have said.
