TreeHugger on Myspace: Who Wants to be Our Friend? [Updated]
by Michael Graham Richard, Gatineau, Canada on 08. 4.06
Okay, so we decided to get a MySpace page to see what all the noise was about. With a rank of 5 6 (it depends on the day) for traffic on Alexa, something must be going on there, right? You can have a look at our page here, and if you are also a member of MySpace, feel free to add us as "friend" and drop us a comment. We're feeling a bit lonely in this strange (and badly designed) new environment, and having friends with us would make it more bearable.
Update: Less than a month after posting this, we almost have 700 friends. Thank you to everybody who added us to their friends lists!

Hi TreeHugger, as a friend and as a fellow treehugger, I have to say that creating a MySpace account is a big mistake. MySpace is owned by Fox and by Rupert Murdoch. Fox is an adjunct of the Republican Party. There have also been recent stories run on how Fox is allowing massive data mining of MySpace by the government. I'm saying that MySpace isn't what many people make it seem to be. I know you are so very progressive and beautiful, please do not associate yourself with MySpace.

editor note: I think it's possible to use MySpace subversively, just like it's possible to use the mainstream media (owned by multi-billion $ companies) to do good things, just like it's possible to send a email using hotmail and not support Microsoft.
Greenpeace, Grist, An Inconvenient Truth, StopGlobalWarming.org, etc.. all have MySpace pages. In the grand scheme of thing, they are minuscule to MySpace's traffic, but the people - and to us the emphasis is on reaching people - they connect with through those pages can change their lives and educate others and help us move forward. That's gotta be worth something.
Indeed, being "on the other side" is actually the best thing to do to communicate a message to an audience that is not necessarily the enviro/activist folks. It's necessary, therefore, to use all the channels available for informing and mobilising the public.
infiltrating the "other side" may be a good idea but for people wanting a social networking website for people on this side check out:

no no no Treehuger you disapoint me... Myspace is evil.
