Sustainable Stylish Sunglasses
by Kara DiCamillo, Newport, Rhode Island on 08.23.06

Our sunglasses went overboard recently while cruising around Newport Harbor here in Rhode Island. Instead of trying to replace them with our usual standbys, we thought we’d do some research to see if there were any “green” ones out there first. We found several fabulous frames at Greenloop that we just love! Sustainable and stylish - those two words sound good together. Made from iWood, each pair of these sunglasses is handcrafted and made from the highest quality wood that is sustainably harvested. They are a tad on the expensive side, but the price is pretty comparable to other high-quality sunglasses. ::Greenloop

At $350.00 a piece, these glasses are a lot more than "a tad on the expensive side"!
can you clarify what "Made from iWood" means? I've never heard of iWood
I wonder how heavy these are - teak is a pretty heavy wood.
Your search was well- intentioned. This isn't a flame.
But these glasses ... well, it's tough to think of a fashion item that conspicuously expensive as "sustainable." Buy a cheaper pair and plow the difference into supporting a local co-op or supplying solar cookers to people who need them.
Besides, they look like something from the Flintstones. ;-)
A pair of sunglasses in the $2 range can easily be found at one of the many Salvation Army stores in Rhode Island.
Thanks for your post - I happen to like sunglasses and do spend money on them. Why is that bad? They last longer than a cheap pair from Salvation Army. Love these!
Are these glasses considered sustainable because one portion of the plastic was replaced with wood? What about the lens, nosepiece, and earpiece? They look like they are made of plastic. Can an object be considered sustainable if parts of it are not?
I'm diggin the look. Who would've thought to use wood to make chic sunglasses like these? My only concern is how heavy they are. I'd definitely wear them if I had the money!
How about just plain ol'reading glasses... I can't find a descent pair anywhere anymore. There are relatively nice ones for women, but for men? Have you seen the selection, at CVS, at Walgreens, or any other pharmacy? Wiry, tiny, clunky, ugly... Why can't anyone out there make nice reading glasses for men, that don't cost an arm and a leg? They used to exist, big, bold things, fun, interesting... but seems like these companies have all gone... Here's a project, who out there wants to work on it with me?
It is worthful to pay for a good product and they also seem to be very fashionable.

There is not high price for such a good product, specially if it is good for our health.

Any price is important if it will be used for our own benefit.
