Thanks to reader Albert Gibson for tipping us off to a new project by Les Stroud, star of the Science Channel (US) and Outdoor Living Network (Canada) television show Survivorman. According to Les' web site:

While renegotiating doing another season of “Survivorman™”, Les Stroud is producing two one-hour specials for Canada's OLN (Outdoor Life Network) called “Stroud... Off The Grid”. This new and captivating show will highlight Les’ family's move to their 150 acre bush lot with solar power, rain harvesting systems, and many new technologies for living an energy-conscious and self-sustaining life. “Stroud…Off the Grid” episode 1 will premiere in Fall 2006.
Of course, off-grid living is nothing new for Stroud: the documentary Snowshoes and Solitude followed Les and Sue Jamison's year-long 1994 sojourn in the Canadian wilderness in an attempt to replicate life in North America 500 years ago. ::Official Les Stroud Site

survivorman sucks,i only whatched it once, but seen so many mistakes the show made its funny, such as them complaining about not haveing a plowed road to drive on,but when you see the family sking out,it isplowed wut the crap was that?i could go on but i wont,

jump to top wade says:

your show is very helpful and entertaining. i just started watching and i am hooked. thank you, and I will be looking for new episodes in the future.

I think survivorman is great. I have seen other survival shows. I can't beleave they go for three days without a fire. survivorman teaches you that you can make one in no time and without matches. Catch food in the harshest if climates. I love the showand I wish I had the time and the guts to do what les does and does so well...

My husband is a complete and utter nature nut.
Before we married he had several poiseness snakes.......scarry stuff.

He has been watching survivorman since it's beginning and loves the show.

To my surprise I finally looked up to find out just who this survivorman was.......and I realised this was a friend from school..

Way to go Les........your show rocks and we also caught the segment of you living off the grid.

Keep on keeping on.

I think Les and his family are doing amazing things. I respect him and his family for personally taking an effort in helping our environment. From what I could see it also seems that Les and his wife have raised their children to repsect and admire the greater things of life. I look up to him and hope that one day I can do the same.
Keep up the great work.
Sincerely
Jamie Hesser

I really like survivor man.
but Dharma Dog i agree with you on the fact that the episode i saw of off the grid did have quite a bit of Non common sense situations which i find unexpected for survivor man based on the countless survival episodes of his i watched. but i think this might stem from him trying to identify with the average viewer who has lost almost all sense of what common sense is. i also found it how the show was about going off the grid but it seamed like the entire grid was working on building his cabins. i also cant believe he didnt find a piece of land next to a river. because hydro electric power is easier to generate at higher quantities more consistently. to tell u the truth im an architectural technologist and its been my dream for 2 years now to find myself 150 acres up north in ontario to start a self sufficient lifestyle. so while watching this show im reminded of all the things surv man is missing. i wish i were an adviser to him. im sure he does not live too far from my house. oh ya. the funny thing is surv man was using all the machines i was planning to get. i mean down to brand names. i bet i even know the store he got all them Hitachi machines. anywho surv man keep up the good work, give me a call!!!! oh ya. surv if your listening its a good thing that contractor told you to take off that plastic poly from the walls before spray foaming because the plastic can only be put on the warm side of the insulation because the other way around would result in water condensation. he got real lucky there. oh god why are students sooo poor and unable to get 150 acres of land. :-(

jump to top adam j says:

Survivorman is terrible, he usually wimps out and calls for help. Also who cares he is living off the land, try being born into a family that has no running water or electricity.

jump to top Anonymous says:

Does anybody know how to get a hold of the "Off the Grid" series he did in Canada?

jump to top Anonymous says:

Ok, This show is terrible!! Man vs Wild is soooo much better. First of all he is trying to BE bear grylls lol and it just doesnt work. Second off, i have only seen two episodes and actually one is on now and i have noticed that everytime he tries to do something like, catch a fish in the water with a stick..It is just funny that they always cut away or make it seem like a long time then next shot he has it without us actually SEEING him get it.And to the person who says that its only him with a camera.HA nobody is there to really see if people are there, just cuz he makes it look like he puts a camera up and thats it..

ANYWAYS lol this show has nothing on man vs wild and Bear grylls is so much more entertaining!!!

jump to top nicole says:

Worst. Survivorman. Ever.

He gets dropped in some arctic area and is given a giant fur coat, a gigantic chunk of seal blubber (extremely useful), three matches, uncooked seal liver, a knife, and a RIFLE! (only to be used on polar bears, but still....)

Oh yeah, sounds like "surviving" to me.

I agree, Man vs Wild is 10 times better.

Survivorman cries a lot. When Bear found something to eat he gets all crazy like Gollum finding fish. Les always cries about it. "Oh I found some snails, I wish I had some garlic butter."

jump to top dave says:

Survivorman could use taking a course in survival!
He starves, drinks amazon river water rather then collecting rain water, is constantly getting his boots and feet wet and not caring for his body in the least. I believe we would find him dead in two weeks in any of the locations he has been dropped of at. He blows.

jump to top Palehorse says:

Survivorman is an awesome show. Les is a down- to- earth, no hype kind of guy. Very likeable, knowledgeable and witty.

jump to top Teri says:

The show is entertaining but he dosn't seem to really do well in the survival dept. The short synopsis for virtually every show is "build a fire, build a shelter, starve for a week". Occasionally he finds a grasshopper or some grass to chew on. The only time that he actually managed to procur a good sized meal was in the swamp episode. He nearly stepped on a large rattlesnake. Fortunately he was carrying a good sized stick with which he was able to kill the thing. Lots of laughs to be had in this series.

jump to top Butch says:

Have you man vs wild fans heard of the people coming out saying much of it is staged? There was soem press on this about a month or so back. Yes Les may cry or have to give up at times, but at least he's trying to do it for real. The whole show isnt full of convient "finds" like man vs. Strange how Bear always has the right thing at the right time isnt it? Rope across a cavernous abyss just "left behind" I dont know one climber that would leave a rope behind. No Les isnt as sensational but he's really doing it. Parachuting into the situation? Give me a break at least Les is in real world places with real world reasons for being stranded there. Sorry I will get off my soap box now.

jump to top Sean says:

IMO i think the shows were created not only for the entertainment but to supply knowledge of something that can and does happen, both have said that your first decisions are critical, thats what counts.

jump to top CHRIS says:

Funniest show ever - because his survivor skills are so appallingly bad, it's great fun to watch and ridicule him. He can't use a throwing stick, keep a hammock tied up, catch fish, use a spear and gets sick because he forgets to boil his water. What a dickwad. Now add to that his flat, monotone delivery, constant bitching and lame excuses and you have the recipe for the funniest and WORST REALITY SHOW EVER.

Attention you morons who like the show. Les would die of starvation if left out for another week. He is not surviving, he's slowly dying, and then bailing before the inevitable occurs.

Heres some real people living not off the grid, but Sunny Baba is someone who has walked his talk and when the grid goes down hes someone who can live NOTHING.

Les, is one of the coolest guys in T.V. No bull just him out in nature doing what he loves.

jump to top Allen Struble says:

Les shows people... everyday people that are not ex-marines and survival experts... how to get an advantage in a survival situation. He makes mistakes, most people probably would.

Bear is more gung ho about finding civilization as quickly as possible.

jump to top Anonymous says:

Man, why are people so hateful to Les? Quit comparing Les to Bear. They both have their own styles of showing how to survive. I like both but Bear kind of grosses me out a lot. All of these people who bad mouth either Les or Bear, I would like to see any one of you survive a week in any one of the situations Les or Bear has put himself in. It's easy to criticize people when you have absolutely no clue what they are actually going through. Show some respect or try to survive by yourself for a week then you will have earned the right to talk crap.

jump to top Joshua says:

Les Stroud is awesome. Bear grylls is ok i guess. But, Bear has a camera crew and probably medical crews too, it is not necessary for him to kill and eat any animal because he is in no danger. Les puts himself in that situation, and survives. Les does nothing to put himself in harm's way, because he's surviving. The key to surviving is...well... NOT DYING! So before you judge stroud, put yourself in his shoes. And bear grylls needs to stop climbing stuff! GEEZ!

jump to top Josh says:

i hope les will due a follow-up on his OFF THE GRID home,it's really interesting to me good show!

jump to top melvin halman says:

Les does an outstanding job if you consider that he is doing all the writing, photography and probably a good deal of the editing. I watched Bear fake killing a rabit with a stick once. It was laughable. Bear has a different delivery. He has an infectous British enthusiasm. He is arguably more physical but some of the risks he portrays he is taking would be foolish for all but the most gifted and skilled athletes. Les seems far more genuine and believable.

jump to top Geoff says:

Les Strouds shows are super entertaining and often shows a wonderful unspoiled landscape. His new show, "Off the Grid" has this stingy Al Gore nay-sayer seriously considering building a place for my own family. Thanks Les! Please do more episodes from your Off The Grid Estate!! I'm hooked!

jump to top Dan Tracey says:

Just watched "off the grid", if you can call it that. !st, buying land without all year road access, stupid. But he had already lost me in the opening when he complained about the horizon being destroyed by giant wind turbines. NO, they're beautiful to watch, they're providing the power...ya know, like you're trying to do. Anyway, I wish I had all the omney in the world so I could just buy my way out of bad decisions like getting a chopper to airlift in supplies when the trucks get stuck because I didn't buy land with all year access, or useing my backhoe to dig a weill, or firing up the generators to work on the house....meh, he's causing more polution than he'll save. I had to stop watching after they showed the chopper....sorry dude, it's a great idea and I commend you for it, it's just a bad show.

jump to top Eric says:

The Amish where I live, central Pennsylvania, having been living "off the grid" forever. Not such a big deal here.
