New Grist Organic Beer
by Kara DiCamillo, Newport, Rhode Island on 08. 8.06
We learned recently about New Grist from Grist Magazine (hmm…go figure). Brewed at the Lakefront Brewery along the Milwaukee River in Wisconin, they not only offer organic beer but it’s also the first beer brewed without malted barley or any gluten-containing products to be authorized by the U.S. Government. Each batch is tested for gluten prior to fermentation, before being bottled and shipped. And, Lakefront was the first American brewery to produce a certified organic beer under its own label. The brewery began with only sixty barrels of production and sold them exclusively to taverns within "rolling" distance of their Milwaukee headquarters. Now, the beer is available for distribution in six packs of 12-ounce bottles. If you live close by, Brewery tours are available and make sure to stop in for the Fish Fry on Friday evenings. New Grist beer is gluten-free, but it is not organic (or at least the company's web site doesn't mention it).
writer's note: they offer an organic beer called Organic E.S.B. (Extra Special Bitter) and it can be found on the "Meet Our Beer" page.
First approved by the government? I'm not sure what that means, but I know there are other breweries making gluten free beer. Widmer in Portland had one this year at the Brewers Festival and I'm sure there are others.
writer's note: i believe it just means that they were the first brewery to be certified doing so, not necessarily the only one in the country.
As a Wisconsin native, I have only this to say. "Youse guys wanna come over to my place for a drink once, eh?" "Bring da brewskis will ya?"
I've tried New Grist before...as a matter of fact I still have two bottles in the fridge for whoever wants them. For medical reasons I'm on a gluten free diet, so finding a gluten free beer worth drinking wasn't easy. I recommend Bards Tale's "Dragons Gold" beer. It's a gluten free beer that tastes like beer. You can check it out at bardsbeer.com. I believe it's brewed in San Jose, CA.
Was the last comment a shill or what? I've had Bard's before...but the bottles exploded in my refrigerator because they were contaminated. Nice! I'm a celiac and the New Grist tastes much more like a real beer. Bards and Ramapo are too sickly sweet.
With an estimated 2 million celiacs in the US alone, we are starting to attract attention.

mmm... beeeerrr...
I've tried a lot of beers and New Grist has to be near the bottom of the list for taste. I'm not sure how they manage to make a liquid taste just like a dry sponge.
