A couple of weeks ago, many of you shared your insights about the possibility of Hollywood giving us cyclists who don't look like lame-asses. After witnessing yet another display of dorky pedaling during Ricky Bobby's nadir in Talledega Nights this weekend, we're convinced that more must be done. Put on the coolest helmet you can find and help the TreeHugger Hollywood Bike Patrol spot celebs on bikes in real life, in movies, and on TV. The Patrol will work similarly to Defamer's PrivacyWatch, only you're welcome to submit media sightings. Read about Colin Farrell pedaling in the Valley? See a gem like Brad Pitt's family of cyclists moment? Witness yet another use of the bike as the screen writer's go-to indication of prolonged adolescence or defeat? Help us out! Well, Lance Armstrong is a good start. He's definitely "cool", if not Hollywood.

Also, I hate to say it, but average america would be stoked to see ol' president W on his mountain bike. Even if he does fall over from time to time, it's great that the president rides a bike, at least occasionally.

In the Chinese movie "Peacock" there was a cute scene where the girl was cycling with a parachute tired to the back of the bike. Here is a screenshot of the scene.

Who really cares what hollywood thinks anyways? I don't need a movie star to make me feel good about riding a bike. Biking has it's own merits.

Those of us who already cycle don't need Hollywood to tell us what's cool, but don't doubt putting a big name and famous face behind an activity lends credibility for a large number of Americans and other people around the world.

I personally think dorky is good -- one of the problems we have is that cycling is seen as a special recreational activity requiring a skintight uniform and extra safety equipment.

Maria Shriver here in California frequently participates in charity rides (and looks good doing them), but again, this is special event riding.

If you want to capture those who find Jake Gyllenhaal attractive (ok, including me!), there have been many many photos of him riding bikes with Lance and Matthew McConaughy in recent tabloids...

Bikes are great, I bike a lot, but I also won't deny, that biking, on roads, in traffic, is dangerous as all heck... one false move, and you're no competition for four wheelers and asphalt. Deaths and accidents on bikes are many... so what do we do? How do we make biking safer? Bike lanes, roads closed to automobile traffic, softer bumpers... shame we can't discover anti-gravity (or smuggle it outside Area 51) and build cars and trucks without tires, just hovering over the ground, so if you fall off a bike, you don't end up road kill. Every solution has its own build-it problems, and again, its own solutions, the trick is to keep thinking, never settle for anything. We'll get there, somewhere... eventually... there's no one size fits all. Bikes are alright, but bones are brittle, and I'd rather have a small reinforced box around me driving around London, or Paris, Rome or New York. But that's just me.

Who cares about Hollywood! I just got back from Berlin - a f*%@ing awesome city that does give a hoot about cycling and -ists. I rented a bike for 4 euros for a day and a half from this german-style hippie commune place, then took to the streets. Berlin has these great bike paths that are integrated with the street and sidewalk in such a way that makes it easy to not die while biking.
