TreeHuggerTV – Green Your Shower
by Leonora Oppenheim, London, UK on 07.26.06
This week TreeHuggerTV gets steamy with shower statistics. Did you know that in The United States people use an average of 2.5 gallons of fresh water for every minute they shower? Wow, that’s a lot of water huh! Well THTV have taken a couple of minutes to show you how you can make your shower more eco-friendly. You can install a low flow shower and save 50% of the water you’ve been using. There’s also room for more than one in there! Lather up with someone else and enjoy your shower time to the fullest!
There’s more watery reading to be had at the American Waterworks Association, Waterwiser, Greenbuilder and H2Ow. You can also get all soapy in the TH archives reading about low flow shower heads. The stylish Neco Showerhead uses 7.1 litres per minute. The cosy Tiara double showerhead is designed for two! It can drop to 4.4 litres/min for the one head and 8.8 ltr/min in dual mode. Bricor's Showerhead does one gallon per minute. Then there’s the bargain shower head from Real Goods at 1.2 gallon per minute. The Aqua Helix wins the competition by using only half a gallon per minute, though we suspect this might be just a dribble.
We hope you are all enjoying the smart new THTV screens at the top of every TreeHugger page. Just so everyone can choose their favourite format here are a number of other ways you can watch THTV: Subscribe to our weekly podcast from iTunes, so that you receive a new episode every week without any effort at all! I drilled out the water restricter in my shower heads. Both of them. Now I get a torrent of fresh hot clean water! It is great and you moonbats are right, it is more fun with my girl friend.
Help, i am going green and i am desperately looking for a green alternative to pvc, vinyl and lead pans for showers. I cant find anywhere - please help if you have any information.
ps love your site, always a help
In the meantime, start by taking a shorter shower!
Jon Carry's right -- it IS more fun showering with his girlfriend!
I have the AQUA HELIX showerhead. It worked fine for 2 weeks when set to its most gentle setting adjustment; it produced a fine spray. However, on week 3, it began to spray using a painful sputter. Now on week 5, it only produces an extremely painful *narrow* jet of water. My husband says it feels like his skin is being cut with a knife and we therefore cannot shower with it anymore. During the first 2 weeks when the AQUA HELIX nozzle was working properly, the rubber tube inside the showerhead was rotating normally and producing a spray. Now however, the tube is not rotating at all. The product instructions indicate that this will occur when the water pressure is low. However, we have a spare AQUA HELIX that we left new in the box. When we replaced the defective showerhead with the new showerhead, the new showerhead worked properly producing a fine spray! When we switched the showerheads again, the defective one produced the narrow jet of water. ***This proves that it wasn't low water pressure that is causing the problem. I am currently contacting both the vendor who sold this to us as well as the manufacturer (Jet Blast Products) for a refund, repair, or replacement. We are concerned that our spare showerhead may go defective in the coming weeks. I will post again regarding the results of all this.
Hmmm.... not such a bad idea... maybe I can use that argument with my girlfriend that we need to conserve water.
I posted earlier about my experience with the Aqua Helix. I had called the manufacturer of this showerhead (JetBlast Products) about the problem however, the person I was always forwarded to never answered his phone and never returned my two phone calls. It seems the manufacturer of the Aqua Helix does not stand by the product and is unresponsive to customers regarding problems with their product.
