Robert Redford Announces Green Sundance Channel
by Erin Courtenay - Madison, WI on 07.21.06
Grist brings us news that the man who paved the way for Brad Pitt to be celebrated as a hunky-Hollywood TreeHugger, Robert Redford, has announced the launch of Sundance Channel Green. The new channel will "present original series and documentary premieres about the earth’s ecology and concepts of 'green' living that balance human needs with responsible environmental stewardship."
Programming on the new channel will include:
1. Original Series: Change Agents: a high energy, story and character-driven documentary series about the people and projects that are on the front lines of environmental sustainability and innovation.
2. Interstitial Series: Sundance Channel will launch several interstitial series that will highlight a range of environmental issues and offer viewers innovative suggestions to effect change in their own lives.
3. Documentaries: The block will feature compelling feature length documentary premieres and news specials on environmental subjects.
Viewers will be able to tune in to the new eco-channel in early 2007. ::Via Grist

Good on you Robert Redford. Wish we could get the station in Sydney. Sounds brilliant.
I love this man!! His good looks run soul deep. Sundance rocks!
Great idea from a great man!
Not only a talented actor, but a human being who believes in the causes he supports!
Having a brother who has started some great TV channels, HGTV, Food Network, etc.. I really love to see more and more needed ideas turned into informative channels.
This new idea will bring much needed attention into the GREEN world- which we need people to really understand!
Thank you!
Mr. Redford:
Thank you for your leadership on the issue of the environment and for using your resources in response to the cautions of global warning. This kind of leadership should be coming from many fronts at this point in time. I so admire you for stepping up to the plate. I embrace this initiative.
We just wanted to say we think Rocert Redford
is Definitely E-OK, Environmentally & Ecologically OK.

Dear Mr. Redford,
It is heartening to see individuals in the limelight doing their bit for a cause that concerns all of us, and one which requires everone to act in concert.
I am a 31 year old artist, and have never owned a motor vehicle in my life. I get by on public transport , and I believe mass transit is one of the ways in which we all can play our part in reducing breenhouse emmissions and our dependence on fossil fuels. This is particularly urgent in your country of domicile. If the urban administration in all major cities undertakes a concerted drive to improve public trnasport and implore people to use it to commute(at least to work and back), it would make a significant difference in the near future(or atleast until such time that alternative energy surces for vehicles become a viable reality for the masses).
This is just one example of the many rather straight forward ways in which a difference can be made.
I have thought of several other such intitiatives that require a simple shift in attitude, more than anything else, to make a change( another simple would be to intitiate a drive to watch movies in theatres as opposed to renting individual copies, as it is more efficient and consumes less resources).
However my plebian voice is drowned in this era of terabytes and bulwarks of vested interest from bottomline minded corporations and apathetic goverments, often allied together. However, a figure like yourself can add considerable credence to such intiatives. I am not against big bussiness at all, but do believe that it should be conducted in a more socially responsible fashion. especially in the developing world, with fractured/colluded govermants and lax/ nascent regulatory enforcement.
I have chalked up several other such initiatives, that require an almost indiscernable shift in attitude, but could make a big difference in the long run and would to happy to discuss/share them with you.
In most likelihood you will never read my plea, however I feel it is my responsibiltiy , a citizen of the planet, to voice my opinion on this urgent issue.
I , extremely optimistically, hope to hear from you.
regards,
Dev.
I have an idea that has a huge potential for reducing oil consumption. Huge is an understatement. I have tried several avenues to generate interest and help. The project is larger than I can handle with my resources. But I do have some small amount of resources to contribute.
I've tried to find Mr. Redford's email address, though I realize that the chances are slim that an Icon such as he would have time to notice or respond to my query.
Anyway, is there help out there for this vague notion that I am putting forth?
Thanks,
Forrest
Dr. Mr. Redford... might this film project be worthy of your "green" channel?

Dear Robert redford, idol of my youth,
I write you from Romania and I am a militant for protect of nature and animals.
In 9 sept, because abuses against animals( domestic, Zoo, strays dogs ,horses and others), you make a great meeting in Bucharest.
I ask you to be near us, at least a telegram.
Congratulations for your ecological activity!
Dear Mr. Redford,
Thank you for investing so much of your time and effort in coming up with different ways to save our planet. I think it was a terrific idea for you to gather Mayors from across the nation together and ask them to share the unique ways in which they have been "Thinking Green" within their communities.
I have been an elementary art teacher for the past 12 years and have been promoting the idea of "Thinking Green" to over 800 students a year. I feel it is my obligation to inform and empower my students to be able to make a positive impact on our environment by reducing, reusing and recycling. Our youth come to me with open hearts and minds and are willing to make a positive impact on the environment in their daily lives.
I think educating our youth at a grass roots level is a movement that should not be overlooked. Maybe the mayors of our cities can develop a program that reaches our youth through the visual arts while promoting an appreciation of nature? Maybe the mayors of our communities can give children the opportunity to appreciate nature through art and at the same time promote the necessary knowledge and skills needed to protect our earth.
I have great ideas to share with the mayors if any of them are open to the idea.
Thank you for listening.
Sincerely,
Joan Borzym

This evening on the Sundance Channel I saw a piece about Gorilla Gardening. I believe it took place in Portland, Oregon. I am very interested in getting involved in Gorilla Gardening in the Phoenix, Arizona area. Is there such an organization here and if so, how do I contact them?
