Ubiquitous denim brand Levi's will be adding 100% organic cotton jeans to their fall 2006 product line. Levi's jeans made with organic cotton will be available in a range of popular fits and finishes and marked with a few subtle identifiers. Jeans made with all, or a significant percentage of, organic cotton will be signified as "Levi's Eco" and feature an embroidered lowercase "e" inside the front pocket, or at the bottom of the right leg of each jean. A natural colored canvas "Levi's" tab and "Two Horse Patch" made from 100% organic fabric as well as natural colored pocket stitching of the brand's arcuate will also indicate the jeans are made from organic cotton. Other TreeHugger-friendly elements include the use of recycled buttons, rivets and zippers, and natural indigo was used to dye some styles of jeans. All external packaging will be made from organic fabric or recycled paper and printed with soy-based ink.

The jeans will be available in November 2006 exclusively at Levi's U.S. stores with additional products to be introduced in spring 2007. The fall U.S. introduction is part of a global launch of products made with 100% organic cotton. In Europe, the Levi's brand will offer certified organic denim versions of its most popular styles -- the Levi's(R) 506 Standard Fit Jean for guys and the Levi's(R) 570 Straight Fit Jean for girls. They will be available in select stores within Europe at the end of 2006. Additional styles made from 100%, or a significant percentage of, organic cotton will be introduced in both regions in 2007. ::Levi via ::CSRwire

Does anyone know how much they'll cost?

This is great news.

jump to top Justin says:

Any news on where they intend to have them manufactured? Green, to me, means socially sustainable as well... something Levi's has moved away from since bowing to pressure.

Two thumbs up for this move by a major brand producer - especially considering that the Levi brand is struggling to survive. This is a bold move form this company that I think deserves our applause as it appears that Levi has thought through the entire lifecycle of this product.

While I'm glad Levis is producing more environmentally conscious products, I think they're missing an important branding opportunity.

Sounds sweet! Are they sweatshop-free?

jump to top chase says:

this is nothing that Howies haven't been doing for years now...and their products are ethically sound too, which i doubt the same could be said for Levis.
Interestingly enough Levis tryed to sue Howies for the placement of their jeans label tab too...

I sent them an email asking about working conditions under which Eco is being/will be produced. I also asked for an expected price range. The response I go was pretty much verbatim from the information on the site. They said nothing in response to my actual query. I strongly suspect these jeans are being made under the same sweatshop conditions that go toward the production of all major jeans brands. I guess better sweatshoppy w/organic cotton than sweatshoppy w/conventionally grown cotton, but really, second hand's the way to go. Good, name brand jeans can be found at Plato's Closet and other thrift stores in most cities. If you're less choosy or sifting through racks for the right size, there's always Goodwill too.

i think this is a great move for levis. the green movement is something that most people and companies are adopting step-by-step. anything to promote the ideas and knowledge about it is helping! although it may seem that it is only a small step, another step will follow.

It's a good thing world famous brands choose voor eco-lifestyle as well!

jump to top nonex says:

The mens are $68, the womens are $79, and they're made in Indonesia (at least the mens are).

jump to top Nick says:

They should do organic kids' jeans. In addition to all the god that it does, it would help get the message across to my chldren.

jump to top EL says:

Tell everbody thisFantastic news!
jiehaa give yourself a big smile :)

jump to top Klarabella says:

The jeans are the bomb. Levis are all i wear. I refuse to wear anything else. Keep up the good work.

jump to top jose says:

I love the feel of the ones I bouht. I really can't convince myself the organic issue is worth the discussion knowing that they are made abroad and to ship a pair of 'organic pants' to Oklahoma is going to cost something ecologically. I assume if I were a real tree hugger I'd search out some other solutions. My butte looks pretty sweet in them, really. I like the fit etc.

There is french brand, NU, that make jeans with organic denim and that are not sourced in sweatshops. NU hopes that young people are perceptive enough to understand that Levi's is just makin a (great) marketing operation, but that they aren't going to change their core business. That's why NU makes only organic and ethic jeans with a young and trendy style.

You can ask for more informations on www.nustreetwear.com. We will be pleased to answer to all questions.

jump to top NU says:

Levi Strauss is a disgrace to real Americans who work hard in America. They sold their souls to the devil when they abandoned those who made them who they are and they will crash and burn miserably like the rest of the traitors. Introducing "Green" Levi's out of desperation is a hollow, and in my opinion pathetic, attempt to salvage their greed-driven company and nothing more. Who cares about organic cotton when ships belching wretched exhausts have to travel thousands of miles from the sweatshops of origin to deliver them. Come on people. Wake up. Search for American-made clothes and lose the fashion-driven mania that would cause you to buy garbage made by uneducated children and peasants who earn 10 cents an hour. "Green" Levi's is an oxymoron and if you buy them you are a moron.

jump to top Rob says:

Rob, I have no doubt that what you said is true, but they are very comfortable and they fit like a glove. Introducing a 'green' line might not be much, and it's clear that it's a desperate attempt to gain more buyers, but organic denim is not easy to find. I'm just glad to see union-made brands introducing organic apparel, such as American Apparel, No Sweat and Nu. I'm very much looking forward to the future of these brands.

jump to top Dylan says:

Unfortunately as much as Levi hyped these jeans, they're only being sold to women on levisstore.com , absolutely no jeans are made for men. In fact the only thing marketed to men are a jacket and two t-shirts, women get the luxury of organic cotton jeans.

jump to top James W. says:

The organic cotton jeans was great... Hope they bring out some new ones the next time!!!

jump to top Levis Jeans says:

i bought a pair of these eco jeans back in spring of 07. they DID make mens jeans which i bought at a vancouver (canada) levis store.
unfortunately.. after over one year of wearing, the organic cotton jeans have literally DECAYED away on me! serious!!

jump to top fivealive says:

If you want to go green buy recycled Levis jeans. They are the best because they are already worn in for you. Nice and comfy.
