Jumbo Shrimp: Smart Car Conversion

Some have wondered if America will accept the Smart Car; Certainly this modest modification will be welcome. It has a little more ground clearance (65 cm) an addtional engine (a 5.7 litre six cylinder diesel) and a better view- you sit almost 3 metres (10 feet) up. The original three-cylinder diesel is retained to turn two big wind-up keys in the back of the car. Built by Mercedes-Benz in Athens, no word on fuel efficiency. ::National Post

So a Canadian news source runs a story on a Greek rally racer driving a modified German car and naturally this leads you to unnecessarily slander Americans. Lloyd, when will you free yourself from your hatred of my people. Is there another demographic for which such unfounded vitriol would be considered acceptable journalism? The news must be built on the facts, not the fevered imaginigs of a hate-monger. Next time you try to slip something like this past your editorial process try switching out the word American for some other equally liable demographic and see what backlash you get.

Next you're going to tell us that Americans were the Christ-killers. You're no Charles Foster Kane. You don't make the news, you're just the messenger.

editor note: Americans - on average - like big cars. This is an objective fact that can be measured statistically and by no way "slander". Keep your pants on.

So how do you call a American Smart? A dumb :-)

jump to top paul says:

It's not slander at all, unless you're using a screen reader... and that doesn't really count.

But it could be libel... if it made any false statements... which it doesn't... So it's not.

A very funny piece Lloyd. Keep up the good work.

There's no slander, nor libel, in the above. It's called satire, and if you are going to confuse that with anti-semitism and libel, then you are supplying more ammunition to those who do hold a contemptible stereotype of "your people".

The more antsy Americans get about these gently jibing comments, the more it looks to the rest of the world like a guilt complex of some kind. Do "your people" have something to be guilty about?

ObSmart: That thing is terrifying with a 5.7 L engine. I can imagine it spending more time flat on its back staring at the sky than upright. Can it still be parked sideways?

I think its VERY funny. I'm not offended, and Americans do worship size. The only thing that will change it is cost. When we pay more at the pump, we will get in smaller cars. Its already starting...

People world wide modify cars. I would consider the "Monster Truck" look an American Icon. I can't imagine an American inspired to have a creation like this to be content with a 5.7 litre V6 diesel. They would certainly prefer a 5.7 litre All-American Iron-Block push rod V8 to do the job. God Bless the Chevy 350 small block. If you're going to make such a rediculously niche vehicle you may as well do it right.
