Wear Dirty Jeans--Save the World

Denim-Blue-Wash-5-Pocket-with-Rhinestone-Jean.jpg Breaking news: to save the planet wear your jeans twice a week, wash them every fifth day, and don’t use a drier. Never iron them. And do not consider dry cleaning. By following these rules you can save 240 kwh of energy a year—that’s equal to using 4,000 lightbulbs for an hour. A study by a French environmental agency on the ecological impact of a pair of jeans has revealed these startling facts. It examined the life cycle of a pair of “average” jeans from start to finish and measured the environmental impact of each step of production and usage. Buying jeans made of cotton originating closer to Europe was also less damaging.. But it's that washing, drying and ironing that wreaked 47% of the damage that jeans caused. Ironing jeans?—only the French. :: Guardian

I just wash my jeans when they start holding their own shape. No one seems to notice.

People wash their jeans after each use? Really? I learned in college that jeans are the near-perfect clothing b/c you can wear them for a week to 2 weeks w/o them starting to smell overly much and w/o them looking dirty.

:)

I'm saving the planet way better than two wears a week. Or is that oversharing?

Ha, I've been doing this for twenty years...it's not just treehugging, it's "trying to fit into too small jeans."
1. Wearing them more than once means they're already stretched out and comfy. No one wants the hassle of the first wear more than they have to.
2. Putting them in the dryer shrinks them!

jump to top Lesley says:

yeah really, who washes their jeans more than every fifth day?

More like once a month if I haven't spilled anything on them before that.

jump to top jaboobie says:

twice a week,ha! i wear the same damn jeans almost every day and wash them twice month! proof again how much i'm out of step with the world, or america that is.

People DRY CLEAN their jeans????

I think every 6 months is about my jeans washing frequency! Raw denim and dark blues just get too faded after each wash. Is this why so many americans seem to have a taste for bland colors?
My Filippa K jeans wore out before I could wash them the second time but that was my bicycles fault. The crotch gave in! Has anyone come accross good jeans to bike in?

I don't know about the French, but ironing your jeans is very popular for "Kickers", or modern day Texas cowboys. Their Wrangler jeans are commonly heavily starched and ironed until they literally shine and could stand up on their own. Not green at all, but of course the 4x4 American made trucks that rarely leave the highway aren't either...

You're supposed to wash jeans?

jump to top FlatGreg says:

I had to click to read the comments and confirm that most folks don't wash their jeans after each wearing.

I still dry mine (well, tumble them until they're mostly dry then let them finish air drying) but usually wash them after the second or third wearing - depending on what I've been doing (normal bumming around means three wears, yard work means single use).

jump to top cybele says:

This coincides with a (?)recent(?) trend in designer jeans: "Dry Denim," in which the wearer receives a perfectly crisp, perfectly blue pair of jeans with no fading or distressing. The wearer wears the jeans for at least SIX MONTHS without washing them to wear in their own "personal" fading and distressing. Once they're distressed to the desired amount, the wearer finally washes them to "lock in" the fading.

Now the fashionistas can claim better motives than just having a jean fetish!

jump to top LoftyDirigible says:

I wear mine typically up to three days without washing, and just put a patch on my favorite pair today to cover a small hole.

I wear my jeans for up to a week without washing them. They rarely get smelly, but they do get a tad bit dirty. I wash clothes only about once a week.

jump to top Nick says:

I go at least a couple weeks before washing jeans. If I haven't been too clumsy with my lunch I can go a month no problem.

jump to top ada says:

I only wash my jeans when they smell bad, some people should wash jeans less often or more depending on things like when do they start to smell. also for the fashionistas out there: jeans/clothes last longer if you dont wash them often, dont use a dryer, and dont iron them. i did an experiment on it in 6th grade, the jeans that were less washed could last for a couple years, even a decade, if you dont wash them and they are good enugh quality. oh, dont throw away your jeans if you follow "fast" fashion, give them to the poor, if you cant wear them (like if they dont fit you anymore or something, but someone else could wear them) then give them to the poor! they need clothes more than we do.

I wash dry and iron after every waring. Try to respect yourself and others.

jump to top B says:

I've been wearing the same jeans for almost three months now, and I haven't washed them once, not do I intend to. I've spilled a half a beer on the lap, too.
Most die-hard denim fans say the same thing: buy a dry-finish denim, and go as long as possible before the first wash. The tag reads: For optimal look wear for several months before dry clean."
I've bought awesome dark jeans before, and after the first wash the color looks like trash. The longer you wait, the more character they have. I"m not saying anything new.

jump to top matt says:

I'm sorry... I do many things to lessen my impact on the globe, but wearing dirty clothes is something I don' thave to do, don't choose to do and would strongly urge others not to do.

Anything you wear once will contain dead skin, sweat and dirt from the world... the longer you wear something the dirteir they become. Jeans are no different, I have no idea why you think we should wear smelly jeans and not smelly suits or smelly undies??

Smelly is smelly, dirty is dirty... I'm guessing some of the people who work with some of you have had meetings discussing your cleanliness in the work environment. If you can smell yourself, others can smell you!

Unclean is uncool. It's 2007, not the middle ages. Be green, but be clean!

I have never washed a pair of jeans in my life. When i buy a pair of jeans i never wash them until they fall apart. I buy very very cheap clothing so that often isn't very long.

jump to top sean hinton says:

I very rarely wash my blue jeans, maybe once every 2-3 months, depending on how often I wear them and how dirty they look.

I have one pair of brown jeans which I wear almost daily, have had them for over a year, and only washed them once because I spilt food on them.
They're a little bit dusty, but not enough to wash them yet, and because they're brown jeans its not visable.
At night when I go to bed I hang them up to air them out a bit, and they've never smelled. They are stretched just the right amount so they fit me perfectly.

When I do eventually wash them again it will probably be in a bucket of cold water - because the washing machine will just strip the colour out.

I get complimented on my brown jeans all the time - no one has ever complained of them being dirty or smelly.

jump to top Laura says:

I`ve had on a pair of black jeans for 3 days and the crotch area stinks of piss if you smell closely. I don't know how you guys can go months without washing them, I suppose it helps if you don't dribble when going to the toilet but still it seems to me that after a few days the crotch area is gonna smell a bit if you get close enough, I suppose this doesn't worry you becuase you don't get that close.

jump to top Nick says:

i skate so my jeans get stinky
