The Quasiturbine, is a new concept (patented 10 years ago), that promises to revolutionize the internal combustion engine. It is said to make engines more efficient, quieter and much lighter for the same torque and horsepower abilities. It also promises to make for better compressors and pneumatic motors (refrigeration, heat pumps, stirling engines, steam turbines).

The Quasiturbine or Qurbine engine is a pistonless rotary engine using a four-sided rhomboid rotor whose sides are hinged at the vertices. For more details see this explanation of how the Quasiturbine works.

Patents for the Quasiturbine are held by the Saint-Hilaire family of Quebec. As well as an internal combustion engine, the Quasiturbine has been proposed as a possible pump design, and demonstrated as a pneumatic engine using stored compressed air and as a steam engine.

Curious. I learned of another similar engine earlier this week. Check it out here

And then there is:

We already have the similar wankel engine, what's taking so loooooooong?

jump to top Sam says:

Wankel engines have problems with the rotor apex seals. The engine shown above would likely have the same problem. Also check out the reported fuel economy of a RX-8 which has an wankel rotory, I don't think these engines are the answer. I keep wondering what happened to the Volvo tech demonstrator hybrid. I saw it about 10 years ago. It had a small gas turbine to generate electricity and a 50 mile range on battery alone.

It's interesting that all auto manufacturers have not clammered for this?Any thoughts to y?

It can run on compressed air.
A battery free non polluting vehicle. How can you beat that?

On the subject of quasiturbines, there is something significant about why a prototype has never been made during all the ten years the notion has been in view. Too much pie in the sky... Consider the following:

-------It just will not function without a comprehensive rotor sealing system, and all the friction effects that accompany.
To date, everyone has eliminated this problem by ignoring it completely.

-------Those oscillating "cars" comprising part of the rotor will ensure plenty of noise, vibration and wear.....more so if no lubrication is used !.

-------- Having a combustion chamber with large surface area to volume ratio will ensure early extinguishing of the combustion flame and plenty of exhaust pollutants. What might be good for taming photo-detonation is no good for combustion flame propagation.

There are so many unverified and wild claims and there are so many detail problems associated with quasiturbines that magic technology cannot solve, it will be no surprise if the subject is merely relegated to just another chapter of modern science fiction.
