smores.jpgWhen was the last time you took your family out for some slow roasting (veggie) hotdogs, flaming marshmallows and s'mores? These days, when Americans between the ages of 8 and 18 spend more than 6 hours a day in front of a TV or computer, it becomes more and more important to get out of the house and spend some time outdoors, especially for kids. Well, here's a great excuse to bust out the old sleeping bags: Saturday, June 24th is the National Wildlife Federation's 2nd Annual Great American Backyard Campout, a nation-wide event. It's a great opportunity to get together with family and friends, have fun telling scary stories, then relaxing under the stars.

Last year, more than 32,000 campers participated. Interested campers just register their backyard or favorite campground, and the National Wildlife Federation provides tasty recipes, astronomy guides, wildlife info and other handy tidbits. Then, on June 24th, grab all your gear, make a camp in the convenience of your own backyard and let the marshmallow roasting begin. [Written by: Courtney Yan]

You go for veggie hot dogs, but then suggest marshmallows, which are definitely not vegetarian? tisk, tisk. I'm all for s'mores, but for me that involves marshmallow fluff and a small torch (no gelatin means not enough structure to skewer)
