Japan Announces Ethanol Edict for All Vehicles

A quickie. Japan is trying to live up to its Kyoto protocol promise to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 6% from their 1990 baseline before 2012. (Unlike laggards like Australia and the USA, who can’t even be bothered to sign up.) One step along the promised road is to make all their petrol powered vehicles run on a minimum of 10% ethanol blends by 2030. The Environment Ministry will also make it law for all new cars will need to accommodate this standard by 2012, with a phase-in mix of 3% ethanol. Ethanol is not without its own package of issues, but being plant-based it does reduce CO2 emissions, compared to full on fossil fuels. via ::United Press International.
