HauteGREEN Sneak Peek: Jerry Kott Glassware
by Collin Dunn, Corvallis, OR, USA on 05. 1.06

The fruit of the vine is enjoyed twice in the latest installment in our ongoing series about what just might appear later this month at HauteGREEN. We spotlight the work of Jerry Kott, who we've featured before on these pages. Both the Khrysalis Lamps and RE Series are made with recycled wine bottles, which Kott cuts apart, frosts and then reassembles with decorative results. He uses keywords like rebuild, redefine, relive, reinvent and recycle for his work, which yields simple, colorful, decorative glassware. Jerry has some interesting things to say about the inspiration for his work: "I have often described the RE series as a marriage of Beyond Thunder Dome and the Bauhaus. It is primal, obvious, utilitarian -- an idea waiting to be explored and adds a new dimension and perspective on how we view what we have from another angle"; about the Krysalis, "When lit, they appear to me as a Chrysalis-exuding it's own energy with it's glow…like a hanging sculpture about to come alive. The simplicity of its form and its function echoes 'less is more.'" ::HauteGREEN and ::Jerry Kott

Wow...really cool stuff. What a remarkable job of re-using glass and the site is fun. Can't wait to see the HauteGreen show!
We are delighted with three of Jerry Kott's artworks in our house: "Soulfood", "Birds of Peace" and "Bluebird of Happiness."
"Soulfood" is an hilarious steerhead crafted from an upturned polka-dot etched wine bottle with aluminum wire antlers. Ours is mounted on the optional base but it can be hung from a wall hook. This is a brilliant rethinking of mounted game. It became the center of discussion amongst visiting friends after the Dick Cheney shooting incident. My wife calls it "Kottle" and we expect to expand our herd.
"Birds of Peace" are a trio of chickens, Mama, Papa and Baby-sized made from Jerry's proprietary "Kottcrete" (warmer than concrete). A gentle tap of the finger sets the birds pecking. These are remarkable sculptures, four curving planes capture the essence of a chicken in minimalist fashion. Although available individually, we like arranging our different-size trio.
"Bluebird of Happiness" is the ultimate paperweight but we have it sitting on the meeting rail of our double-hung window. We rotate it between flight straight up (sitting on its tail feathers) or flying diagonally (sitting on tail feathers and wing). It comes alive when lit from behind. Sandcast, it has one smooth and one rough side. This sculpture is more two-dimensional and shows Jerry's strong graphic skills.
We had the pleasure of meeting Jerry and Scott at their studio while they were experimenting with the RE series of cut and reassembled bottles which sat on window sills, mantels, hung from walls and even hung on light cords (lit from within). Their garden shows another range of sculptural expression. We have enjoyed watching and learning how Jerry's many influences become manifest in this work. We continue to enjoy Jerry's creativity in our home and encourage you to explore his art.

I have been familiar with Jerry Kott's work for many years and
am fortunate to enjoy a number of his pieces in my humble abode.
As a nomad apartment dweller, I have placed his
candleholders, winebottle hybrids, wooden books, Kottcrete creations, and wind chimes in various settings and arrangements. In fact, I have come to find comfort in their careful placement, as their natural shapes and unique textures seem to breathe a life into each new home I make for myself. And I am in constant awe at their endlessly different incarnations and personalities.
My two treasured pieces represent two eras of Jerry's work that I enjoy the most. The first is what I refer to as my "treasure chest". I received it as a gift as a young girl, and was instantly transfixed with the icon of a flaming heart that appears on the cover. In essence it is a wooden "book", and can be opened to reveal a secret space for keepsakes. Each item I have placed inside mimics the word written under the icon: LOVE.
My second equally adored work is a candleholder, fashioned from the bottom of a green sanded winebottle, and a precursor to the glassware that will be viewed at HauteGREEN. Upon first glance, the holder carries the simple shape of the familiar, but upon lighting the candle within, it glows and illuminates words written on the exterior. I often find myself transfixed by it's flickering and will re-read the passages that Jerry has inscribed.
I have found my appreciation in Jerry's art stems from his artistic rethinking of materials and their function, and his ability to infuse each piece with a special lifeforce of its own. As his hybrid of glassware atests, Jerry has found the fusion between art, design, and soul.
Take a moment to enjoy Jerry Kott's work at HauteGREEN, as his art is one you will want to experience.
