GM Kills the Hummer H1
by Michael Graham Richard, Gatineau, Canada on 05.13.06

That's one funeral we don't care if we miss. "Cheering just about every other driver on the road, General Motors Corp. said Friday that it is ditching the H1 by June," announced the SFGate. Green Car Congress said: "the manufacturer, AM General, will convert the H1 assembly line to produce more military Humvees, which the company also produces. For many, the H1 became the symbol for petroleum excess: an overly large vehicle with overly large fuel consumption." Of course, the H1 was a low volume vehicle (only around 12,000 were sold; the also huge Hummer H2 is more popular), but what it represents and the trend it helped push into the mainstream when it came out in 1992 was the problem, not to mention how dangerous it is for other drivers and how it threw fuel (almost literally) on the fire of the arms race on our roads. Good riddance. ::Green Car Congress, ::SFGate.
In other news, "Mark Price, president and founder of the Illiana Hummer Club is looking to buy a fourth Hummer H1." At $147,000 a piece, he must really like them. via ::Appreciation for H1

Remember, all H-1s had diesel engines. That means they could be just as easily modified to run waste vegetable oil as any old Merc or VW. Oh well, I'll probably pick one up cheap in a few years and convert it. Ultimate F-U to big oil.
Well, I seriously doubt that the kind of people buying H1s care too much about the environment and would convert them to SVO. What this means is that they just had much higher PM and NOx emissions than gasoline vehicles..
Also, wasting renewable energy doesn't make more sense than wasting non-renewable, and it wouldn't make the vehicle any less dangerous to other drivers (not to mention annoying, as you can't see from behind it, and the lights are blinding when it's behind you).
I'm not impressed. The H1 is a low production volume bit of impressive engineering. Drop the monstrous (and relatively obtainable) H2 and new H3; then we'd have something to cheer.
Yay, good riddance H1!
Now if only get your siblings off the road...
Good, the market has worked again!
Well, I'd actually use the thing: on the farm, snow plow, some Jeep-camping. Highway travel in an H-1 is awful. Road noise, engine noise, poor handling. I got to drive the Toyota version called the Mega-Cruiser. They never went into production, but two prototypes made it over hear, one for a rich friend. They tried everything to "civilize" the H-1, to no avail in my opinion.
Did you see the H-1 down south that has a gasification unit attached to it? Runs on any food-stuff, totally like a Mr. Fusion. Featured on the Cool Fuel Roadtrip show.
In 30 years they'll be collector's items and viewed as a "piece of history".
I'd much rather they stop making the H2.
This is rather sad. The H1 is the most capable off-road vehicle available and now it will go away, leaving only its rather anemic siblings whose only function is as a fashion accessory. Granted, most people also bought the H1 only as a fashion accessory, but I know at least a few people who put it to good use. Like those living in Wyoming, ten miles out of town on a dirt road when either rain or snow will make the roads impassible. Regular SUVs are no match for such conditions. What is funny though is that a little old civic hatchback (not the newer pocket rocket) will handle those same roads much better (when not wet or snowy). It would be more helpful to put a luxury tax on all SUVs and a an additional gas guzzler tax. Or we could just let gas prices go up to $5 a gallon.
Hmmm, the Google Ads in the sidebar are now advertising Limo Hummer hire and Hummers for sale. Don't think there'll be much revenue from those ads!
"Granted, most people also bought the H1 only as a fashion accessory, but I know at least a few people who put it to good use. Like those living in Wyoming, ten miles out of town on a dirt road when either rain or snow will make the roads impassible."
Maybe these people, instead of all spending $150k on a big SUV (price of the H1), should be a spending a bit of money to improve the road so that not only rich people can use it.
Or just buy a Suburu.. or a Jeep.. but you don't need a Hummer to live in wyoming. That's just silly.
And here I thought the most offroad capable vehicle was the human body... Silly me ;)
Take it into perspective, the killing of the H1 doesent signal anything. GM has still enlarged their SUV's and boasts them now more than ever and isn't about to surrender them for the environment.
Not saying that all of you are for hybrids, but did you know that the warranty on the hybrid battery is VERY short and limited. When it dies it costs about $6,000 to replace and currently there is no efficient, safe way to dispose of it without being damaging to the environment.
Also, if you plan to pave all of the roads that are made of dirt now or not suitable for a small car or a non-truck/SUV, you would be counterproductive. The asphalt is made of oil too. By grading and digging up the ground to prep it for paving, you would relaese nitrogen and carbon dioxide. You could use concrete, but that is too slow to build, expensive to make, and even harder to maintain.
I know plenty of less fortunate people who own 4WD vehicles that are trucks or SUV's...they're not only for the rich after all.
Just something to think about...

Ben, that's simply not true. The batteries in hybrids have a 8 or 10 year warranty, can be recycled without problem (they actually pay you for them) and Honda, Toyota and Ford have tested them for 150,000+ miles without any degradation in performance.
See this.
"I know plenty of less fortunate people who own 4WD vehicles that are trucks or SUV's...they're not only for the rich after all."
We were talking about the H1 which is $147,000. And SUVs in general are more expensive to buy, and more expensive to own than smaller cars.
Eric, how much can your human body off road vehicle carry?
In my opinion the H1 is a much more usefull (and cooler) vehicle than the H2. They cancelled the wrong one.
Hey MGR, lets cite a source not associated with this website:

I'm all for high mileage, but don't just follow a hype that you probably don't even know thoroughly how they are made or run, like hybrids.
Ben, the article you link doesn't seem to disprove anything I've said. Be more specific if you want to discuss this.
And btw, all cars have a battery (though that one doesn't make them more efficient or lower their emissions...), and I don't see you complaining about those.
Toyota warranties their Hybrid battery packs for 8 years or 100,000 miles. Most other manufactures ought to follow suit: the battery is part of a hybrid vehicles emissions control system, and the EPA mandates that coverage on such parts be up to 100,000 miles or alternatively up to 10 years. These are known as "silent warranties" in the auto industry.
As to recycling batteries, old lead acid batteries are recycled safely every day. The Prius uses NiMH batteries, which require even less energy to recycle, and few toxic leftovers.
I had wrote a scathing series of remarks about the hummer, but I clipped them. Lets just say that as a former soldier and an off-road enthusiast, there is no love here for anything Hummer. No love.
the hummer h1 is a ledgend,it will be missed.
Yup!! H1 was the true legend.
So, its quite obvious to me that the author of this article is not a hummer owner. If any reasearch attempt was made, i would have to question the sourses used. I happen to own three humm H1's. I have the origional 1992 Hummer (not an H1, because the h2 didnt exist yet). Then I have a 2002 H1. And this year i purcahsed a 2006 Alpha. The 1992 has a 6.2 leeter diesel engin in it- i get about 14 miles to the gallon. The 2002 has a 6.5 leeter turbo diesel in it- it gets abou 16 miles ot the gallon. the alpha has a 6.6 leeter duramax engine in it. It gets 16 to the callen consistanly even in the city (+/- 1)
all that said, lets look at the H2. On the highway, its GAS engine gets 12 mpg. In the city, it gets 7-9 mpg. The average is only 10 mpg for the much more widly popular H2. The H2 burns a less efficent fuel, gaoline, and requires more of it to operate. If you put a trailer on an H2, the amount of gas used can be as much as 4 mpg- i drove an h2 with one of my deck boats from orlando to baltimore- it cost me well over 550 in gas alone. So, asuming it was 900 miles, and i got 5 miles per gallen, i would have used 180 gallons of gas. THAT sounds like a wast.
If you took the time to read to the bottom of this message, I thank you. I would like to let you in on a litttle secret- I happen to care about the environment so much, that i purchased 3 vehicles, all well over $100,000 that had the ablility to be converted to Bio Diesel. Ever since fuel prices have skyrocketed, I have not been usuing petrolieum based products. I go to the local deli and mcdonalds, and pick up their spent fryer greese. I then convert it to bio-diesel and sit it in hundred gallon drums.
I know you were all thinking i am just some dude trying to get the humvee's reputation up. Its okay- everyone can change thier mind. I hope you do too.
How many of the people who are knocking the AMG really drove one,the real Hummer, gm only bought the name, and ruined the real product! a great machine it was and still is , as far as the driving it handles real sporty, and driven properly the owners usually respect others on the road, it is a target for others to complain about , the kids and also some (adults) think its neat. most 4-wheelers would go out of there way to help others in need., wait till bad weather comes ! I still have my 1978 k5 blazer and the 1993 hummer I drive gets 11-14 mpg (diesel) not the best but better than the o`l blazer(gasoline) which I still have ! because i like it.gm never sold many or run adds on the real thing. the h4 may be good when it hits the market. we`ll see. some people trade milage before safty!
and they want everyone to do the same! bill f. 4dr 93 tan hummer
too bad you can't get rid of all the rest of the large suv's that suck just about the same amount of fuel and put out the same emissions at the H1. The H1 is just a scape goat for you. The H1 has saved many a life, at war and at home. I'd like to see you get hit by one in your hybrids and see who comes out unscathed.
Gee, so many wanting to get rid of all the Hummers. Could it be jealousy. I had a H2 and got 14 mpg on the hwy. I have a H3 and get over 22 mpg on the hwy. Can't see very much that would get better and still have room to enjoy. I will drive a Hummer till there are no more Hummers to be bought.
Could it be jealousy.
Nope, not in the least.
Thanks for asking.
I've had my '97 hardtop H1 since 2000 and I'm still not tired of it. Since I drive it at 65 or less on the highway, I can sometimes average 16 mpg with it. I hope all the critics out there are driving the absolute smallest and best fuel rated vehicle available or they don't have room to talk. They also better be driving really slowly too since we all know that horsepower required goes up with the cube of speed. Also, as far as the H1 being big and dangerous...I could point to a larger vehicle on the road at any given instant since one would have to include the semis, dump-trucks, garbage trucks, ambulances, fire-engines, cargo-vans, box-vans, flat-beds, limos, busses, wreckers, F-250s, F-350s, F-450s, F-550s, C-2500s, etc., etc., etc. And what about all the 6500 lb, 4-door, land-yacht luxo-cruisers piloted by octogenarians... It's funny, even with the H1 packed full of off-road gear, two adults and two dogs, I've had people wonder out loud to me why I'm not driving a hybrid. I thought the reasons would be plain. But I guess not so here they are. I can't drive a hybrid cross-country full of adults and dogs, camping and extraction gear and spend two weeks roughing it on trails that even Jeeps with $10,000 worth of mods can't do. A modified club-cab F-250 might be able to do it but what does that buy me? Sorry if the H1 scares you more than anything else on the road. Maybe try slowing down and driving less aggressively and you'd notice that the large vehicle drivers are the most skilled and well-mannered drivers on the road.
I own 2 h1 hummers and I use them to cut trees and pull them out of the woods,,Its a very durable truck in my business Ive cut and pulled thousands of trees out of the woods with these h1s . The h1 burns less fuel than a suburban suv,, george
They stopped civilian production in order to increase military production. The H1 isn't very profitable, it's a halo car.
well.... I own a farm.... I am the curator of the land there... I work incesantly to support and protect the environment... I am merely a steward of the land...
what I find amazing is that there are so many snooty pseudo environmentalists ( like the dumb broad I met in Virginia) who believe their perspective on everything is superior and proper...
what ever happened to live and let live? I don't tell you not to eat tofu... you don't tell me what vehicle to drive...
Fact is....EVERY vehicle is equally wasteful.. they are all fuel suckers... but your honda civic won't town my tractor and trailer.... and you cannot eat my corn unless I can get it cultivated..
I don't
I get a kick out of people who cannot or never will be able to own a H1 going crazy about the people who do.
"Stop projecting, I don't think the people here are jealous."
Stop projecting, I don't think the people here are jealous.
The E.P.A and all the hippy liberals want to send this country to hell in a hand basket!! They want to impose their will on everyone whether it is right or not, only because it FEELS politically correct to them!
I ride my custom Harley Davidson motorcycle 50 miles to work everyday and around town, it gets around 50 mpg. I also own a 1998 H1 and enjoy using it off road and camping trips, because the H1 outperforms any production off-road vehicle ever made. I really like the idea of trying to help the environment and especially cutting off the Middle East from American Dollars. That is why I want to convert the vehicle to bio-diesel soon.
The funny thing is that the EPA (and the liberal hippies) in their quest to attack everyone that don’t live and think like they do, in order to promote their version of a strictly controlled socialized auto-ownership utopia, is poised to go after motorcyclists with after market parts. Motorcyclists, I cant believe it, of all people, those who get the best fuel economy of all motorized vehicles, and impact the environment the least! Even with a modified engine(which they despise and don’t understand) my engine burns cleaner and gets better fuel economy than the stock Harley 88 cubic inch engine-due to low end torque and my aftermarket 6 speed transmission.
Another thing that the EPA (and people with out any mechanical knowledge) do not understand is that with out all the U.S. aftermarket companies you would not be driving your 30+ mpg car that can also do 0 to 60 in six seconds. Or a full size Diesel truck that gets over 20+ mpg. If it were not for these aftermarket companies and the ability to use these products in our vehicles over the last 100 years, our cars would not be much more efficient than a 1950’s Chevy. Do you really think that the auto manufactures have the time, money and resources to take one specific part and spend countless hours of R&D and money to refine that one particular component in order to make it more efficient for the consumer? Imagine all the components and subcomponents associated with your vehicle.
So when the EPA and the hippies take the fun out of my motorcycling I'll just start burning tires in my backyard and flip them the bird. Maybe everyone else that is fed up with the EPA will join in and stop these commies.
By the way, just because you are a hybrid driving, vegan, PETA card carrying member and live in some city like New York, L.A., San Francisco or Berkeley Ca. please get it through your thick scull that there is the rest of the U.S. who out number you and they just might not live and think like you do. Your way isn’t always the best and only way, if it was, this would not be a democratic society (or maybe you are against democracy?)
And for your information, I am not rich. I happen to be an enlisted service member who relied on the HMMWV (Hummer) everyday to stay alive in Iraq. No other vehicle could fill its role. Next time you feel intimidated and angry at me driving my H1, which you will never understand... GOOD, because I am a proud, free, English speaking, tax paying, hard working American, who will fight and die for his country and quite frankly I don’t like your kind and neither do my fellow fighting comrades. You bet you people make me angry.
Oh brother... you guys are all bent out of shape.
If you actually use the vehicle for what's it's made for, then what's the big deal? If you're a poseur who rides around town in the thing to look tough, then you're an a$$hole and everyone knows it (except possibly you).
The point is that the hummer represents very bad taste except under working conditions, that's all. I couldn't care less what people drive - however - I do think we should pay the real cost of gasoline (ie, take away military subsidies and the price goes up to $4 a galloon) - that would kill the H1 civilian use overnight....
I'm with the soldier on this issue. I live in a rural area and am also a combat veteran. My hummer is very dear to me, a piece of my life i must say I am proud of. This may be something many can't understand, as most have never actually FOUGHT for a damn thing in their lives. I agree with most of you on the yuppie scum factor, but one must be wary of who's toes one steps on. The second you make a blanket accusation is also the second you become wrong.
I am very sad to see the H1 leave as I have always wanted one. I am a very big guy and don't easily fit into most vehicles and I love the size of the H1 and how good it looks. The fact that it has a deisel is even better because it delivers more power and gets better mileage. I also wanted to get a H1 for its offroad capabilities as I live in Maine and enjoy offroading on the trails. I wish that they would bring it back.
You people dont understand i own 7 hummers i make my living off of hummers, do u know how i do this at all hummer tours simple as that i think hummers should not be totaly driven on the road but mainly driven on trails and off roads. OK YES HUMMERS USE GAS WHATS THE DEAL F***.
THE H1 WAS BUILT PRIMARILY TO GO TO WAR.
THE ONLY SUV ON THIS PLANET
CERTIFIED SO BY THE USDOD.
IF YOU COME TO THINK OF IT
THIS TOUGH VEHICLE IS A COMBAT VETERAN
STILL ACTIVELY SERVING THE MILITARY FORCES
ALL OVER THE WORLD
THROUGH DESERT TERRAIN
JUNGLE ENVIRONMENT
SUB-ZERO TEMPERATURES
AND EVERYTHING ELSE IN BETWEEN.
THIS VEHICLE IS AIRDROPPABLE
USING CONVENTIONAL PARACHUTES
OR USING LOW ALTITUDE PARACHUTE EXTRACTION
IT CAN BE MODIFIED TO SUIT VARIOUS ROLES
FROM CASUALTY EVACUATION
TO CARRYING AN ASSORTMENT OF ORDNANCE
IT HAS PROVEN MILITARY TRACK RECORD
FROM PANAMA UP TO THE LIBERATION OF IRAQ.
THIS VEHICLE CAN FORD WATERCOURSES
AS DEEP AS ITS WINDSHIELD BASE
AND TRAVERSE INCLINED TERRAIN
THAT WOULD PUT THE RANGE ROVER TO SHAME.
NO , THE HUMMER H1 IS NOT YOUR
REGULAR CIVILIAN SUV
IT IS MORE THAN THAT.
IT IS THE ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER
BADASSED SPORTUTILITYVEHICLE
THAT COULD OUTPERFORM ANY
ON ANY GIVEN SUNDAY.
IT SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN TERMINATED.
WHAT IT NEEDED WAS REFINEMENT
IN A MORE POWERFULLY-FUEL EFFICIENT
TURBODIESEL ENGINE
IN ITS AERODYNAMICS
IN THE AREA OF WEIGHT SAVINGS
IN THE FUNCTONAL SPACE ALLOCATION
OF ITS VEHICLE INTERIOR
AND FINALLY
IN THE REDUCTION OF ITS OVERPRICED TAG.
HAVING CORRECTED ALL THESE EXCESSES
ONE WOULD END UP WITH
THE MOST DESIRABLE SUV
ON THIS PLANET .
the h1 being canceled is't goingto affect ANYTHING, the people who use to buy H1 hummers, are just going to get other fast sports cars which get the same fuel economy, or just get another ,GMC denali, or other big suv that gets 13mpg.
congress should force automakers, to put more gears in their cars to allow them to get 35mpg hwy, which could easily be done with technology that has been used in Big Rig trucks for the past 25 years
the hummer H1 can already run on bio diesel, it will be built by a new company in the future. the ford f250 pumps out more toxins than a H1 ever will yet people love fords. MY H1 GETS 19 MPG AND RUNS ON BIO DIESEL FUEL PRODUCING SUPER LOWER EMMISIONS THAN YOUR CAR, WHAT DOES YOUR CAR RUN ON? THE H1 ALSO PRODUCES MORE HP ON THE DIESEL ENGINE. TAKE THE TIME TO LEARN SOMETHING IT WILL HELP HEAL THE PLANET. LOOK UP HUMMER H1 6.6 DURAMAX BIO DIESEL ENGINE, YOOU WILL BE IMPRESSED AND WONDER WHY THE USA HAS NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE. PEACE ON EARTH, BLESS OUR TROOPS,COME HOME SAFE, HAPPY NEW YEAR.
Dont forget the H1 is mainly for offroad which many people did use it for, it can run on biodiesel. the h2 and h3s are the things you should be worries about they serve no offroad purpose and get worse gas mileage, also dont forget humans biowaste is a problem too, collect ur gasses in a bottle like they do in Australia for cattle.
