A New US Holiday: Dependence Day

by Michael Graham Richard, Gatineau, Canada on 05.31.06
Business & Politics (news)

en-ac-dd-01.jpgEnvironmental Action is launching the "Dependence Day" campaign. "On a proportional basis, the U.S. has effectively run out of domestic oil for the year and will be forced to rely completely on foreign imports for the rest of the year. For seven months straight—every time we fill up our cars and trucks, we'll be sending our money directly overseas. In 2006, we'll spend some $230 billion on foreign oil—nearly $450,000 every minute." Check out their flashy (literally, flash is required) new website ::Dependence Day, read the ::Declaration of Energy Independence and ::sign it to show support. Via ::Grist

Clever; I like this idea of a "Dependence Day."

Well, the main reason we will have exhausted domestic supplies is that we have made it illegal to drill for it. An ignorant move to be sure.

Ignorant and arrogant. Essentially the "NIMBY-environmentalists" (as opposed to actual environmentalists, nimby-environmentalists only care about the environment when it's happenning off their back porch) have done nothing for the global environment. All they've done is exported dirty drilling methods to impoverished countries that will tolerate them. Big oil spent billions in the 70's, 80's, and 90's to develop small footprint drilling and zero impact exploration technologies, only to be told they can't use them anyway. On the flipside of the coin, maybe the rediculously high gas prices will finally force our economy to diversify it's energy base, and to place greater import on efficiency.

Even if we had twice as much domestic oil, it wouldn't solve anything. It would just push back peak oil a bit and make air pollution and global warming much worse.

The whole point of being oil independent is to reduce oil consumption, not to burn as much oil but to get it closer...

What do you do for the environment, Andy?
