Tip: Use Bioplastic Bags To Keep Food Fresher

Biobags are quite useful for storing food in the refrigerator. Unlike conventional plastic, the bioplastic “breathes” without leaking, allowing heat and moisture to evaporate, which keeps food fresh longer. Biobags are also 100% biodegradable, since they are composed of corn starch. You can purchase them from Drugstore.Com. See a full list of retailers here. See our previous coverage of all things bioplastic here.

As I understand it they use lime or some other mined material to create the bags so I'm not convinced yet.

Don't expect great results if you compost these in your backyard. It takes sustained high temperatures to break down. Even though the Biobag package shows a picture of someone throwing a bag into a backyard bin, the fine print says "Biobag products...will biodegrade rapidly and safely when composted in a municipal or commercial facility. Please check to make sure facilities are available in your community."

Whole Foods, Wild Oats etc should supply these in their produce sections instead of those wisper-thin plastic bags.

If willing to spend at least $250 USD for bio stuff like cutlery, straws, take out containers, Ecoflame, cellophane bags & wrap (freezer safe???), Biobags (including Poop Bags & non brand biodegradeable dog pooper bags & cat liner bags), (some 7th Gen stuff), recycled notebooks, etc then can get bio stuff for cheaper (esp. bulk) than other places & best of all -- in one place. They make their own biodegradeable bags too -- cheaper than Biobags -- dunno how compare but they can print own logo & stuff on them if want. Minnesota (USA) store. Check out pricing for full list of stuff. (& for fun and DIY, check out costumes made from reused materials for the 2005 Wearable Party)

I've often wondered about the "pick up the poop" thing. Would it be better to leave it where it is rather then picking it up with a petro-plastic bag? Those bio-bag doggie bags look great though I think I might get some of those

jump to top Mike [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

As "biodegradeable" means "will break down and produce greenhouse gasses" then surely whisper-thin petro-plastic bags are better...? Especially if making plastic bags out of petroleum means people cannot burn it whilst powering their cars.
