theMap: an Affinity Club Promoting Transit Use

Toronto's formerly wonderful transit system has been deteriorating for years, but for some reason many people just love the TTC and even celebrate it. TreeHugger faves Lori and Kevin at NewMindspace throw birthday parties for it; Spacing Magazine makes buttons of it; Robot Jonny produces anagram maps of it (and gets threatened with lawsuits by it); Now Joe Travers and the Ontario Chapter of the Sierra Club have set up (with no help from the TTC) an affinity program where you get discounts at stores around town just by showing your monthly Metropass as proof that you support public transit. Stores participating tend to be the TreeHugger type (eco-cleaners, health foods and Grassroots ) and are worthy of your custom. ::the Map

"Toronto's formerly wonderful transit system has been deteriorating for years, but for some reason many people just love the TTC and even celebrate it."

Perhaps because a lot of people like public transit. It seems like that should be a natural conclusion for this blog, despite its long-standing and less readily comprehensible tradition of slagging the TTC.

Does the TTC have a lot of problems? Yes. Do Toronto folk complain about those problems regularly? Yes. If you look at most Toronto online communities, you'll find more negative posts about the TTC than positive ones. That said, it's the only public transit system in Toronto, and I can't see why a supposedly green-themed blog has such difficulties grappling with the idea that taking public transit might be a positive thing that people would feel good about.

That first comment is really grumpy. The reason there i more negative comments about the TTC online than positive ones is that people of this city demand better. But obivously the commenter has no idea about sarcasm. The sentence, "I can't see why a supposedly green-themed blog has such difficulties grappling with the idea that taking public transit might be a positive thing that people would feel good about," obvisouly shows you just wanted to rant. Chill out.
