swedish%20coast%20scene.jpgFrom the "Official Gateway to Sweden" we have just learned of this. STOCKHOLM, April 13, 2006 (AFP) - "Sweden has met targets for energy production from renewable sources for the second consecutive year, the country's energy agency said on Thursday. "Sweden fulfilled 99.9% of its quota for the April 2005 to March 2006 period", Roger Oestberg, spokesman for the energy agency, told AFP. In accordance with European Union directives, the country has a target of producing one fifteenth of its electricity from renewable sources such as water, biogas, wind and solar power by 2010, Oestberg said. The target represents 10 terrawatt hours per year of Sweden's current 150 terrawatt hours, Oestberg added". Treehugger has written twice about the bold Swedish goal to be "Oil Free".

Oh, neat.

While I applaud Swedens efforts and achievements and feel if ever nation made an equal effort it might buy us some much needed time to do what wew really need to do and that is completely convert our global energy economy to sustainable resources. Buckminster believed it was possible with technology that existed in the '70's. If america only used 2.5% of the money it spends on defence, america could completly retoolits energy production.

I completely agree with Tamo. Think about the cash spent in Iraq, and apply that to renewable energy research. What would $275 billion do to help reduce our CO2 emissions, since as Americans we lead the world?

The progress made by Sweden
toward achieving their goal
of complete independence
from oil by 2020 is fabulous.
I wish every country could
follow in their footsteps.

"since as Americans we lead the world?" The point of the story is that it's Sweden that's leading the world. Even when you americans try to do the right thing you come out with this nonsense. When are you going to stop believing your own propaganda? The other 95% of people in the world don't think you are leading them, mostly they think of America as the violent dysfunctional loony that is stuffing everything up for everyone else.
