Movie Review: Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth"

Al Gore's new film "An Inconvenient Truth" was a hit at Sundance, the trailer is all over the internet, and now we've found a review of it, courtesy of Ben Jervey (author of The Big Green Apple: Your Guide to Eco-Friendly Living in New York City) at 3r Blogging. His conclusion? "'An Inconvenient Truth' isn't perfect, but it's damn effective." Al Gore has been tirelessly championing his cause to fight global warming of late, and Ben thinks his hard work has paid off: "The result is truly moving, even to someone who feels rather tuned into the issue." Could the film serve as a signal that Gore is prepping a return to politics? Read the whole review to find out, and go pledge to see the film opening weekend (it opens May 24). ::An Inconvenient Truth via ::3r Blogging

I think this movie is wonderful, however, Al Gore should not be flying in an airplane to promote it since airplanes are part of the problem. Also, the eco trip to Peru is a bad idea since flying to Peru is condoning the use of airplanes.

Indeed, flying is not exactly a 'carbon neutral' activity, but if Gore accomplishes half of what needs to be done, it will more than offset any flying he's done. It's all relative. I don't own a car and drive maybe 3 or 4 times a year, so I don't feel so bad about flying now and then, maybe I'm rationalizing, but I'm still reducing!

I am having a heck of a time finding the theatres playing this movie. Is it too early still? Does anyone have a link?

-Andre'

Andre, if I remember correctly, the movie comes out on May 24th.

jump to top MGR [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

Hi, MGR.

That's true, but if it's a limited release (an art house kind of film), they know the theatres that are going to be playing it round about now.

Thanks, I'll be patient and wait.

-Andre

Nick, someone who drives everyday will produce less emmissions than an average plane trip.

Andre:

I asked the filmakers about screening the film to a small audience here in Chicago (our group does this bi-monthly), and this is the letter I got back

"Thank you for your email.

An Inconvenient Truth is being distributed theatrically by Paramount
Classics. It will open in Los Angeles and New York on May 24th and
will then continue to open in other cities throughout the United States
every weekend after that. The film's website,
http://www.climatecrisis.net, will have more information on what
theaters it will be in and when in the next few days.

Thank you for your interest!

Lisa "

I get the feeling that Paramount is going to try to make this as big as Farenheit 9/11. It won't be in every other theatre, but it will be closeby, somewhere.

Thanks, Carl.

That sheds a little more light. I've pledged to bring four people to opening weekend and I need to know where to bring them :-).

If you're not sure if your local theatre will show the movie, call or email them to ask! The more inquiries they get, the more likely they'll show it, even if it's not scheduled to run there now.

I assume that at least the same principle applies there as it did when I worked in college radio - they used to say for every call we'd get, 5-10 others are listening (it was a small university, okay?!). Movie theatres know that a few requests for a movie means that buzz is growing in the community, and that more people are wondering about it.

I'd really like to know what other locations this is being shown. It's now May.. the movie comes out in three and a half weeks, and I've checked fandango, and everywhere else I could (including the movie's website) and nada. How can I see this especially if I'm in a smaller market.. say.. Anchorage, Alaska?

jump to top AkDan says:

hey everyone who's looking for theaters.. it is in fact on the website, here's a link to the list of theaters..

Does anyone have the data on Al Gore's carbon neutral claim?

thank you

An Inconvenient Truth

This movie presents facts I have known for a long time, but with an emotional connection that I didn’t have before. It is very rare at this time to find a main stream politician willing to lay out so much on the line. I kind of have to like the guy, or at least admire his persistence. This is not the point though. The point is a much bigger one for this country and the world. It is this: Someone has used the main stream media to market world change. This is a movie the like of which I have never seen on the big screen. Part campaign ad, part national geographic special, part heart, and part mind. It never the less hooks you and inspires you.

I believe it doesn’t matter who you are, there is something here for you. At a time when our lives so desperately need a change to consciousness, someone is piping operating instructions into your every day life. This movie is accessible and simple. You will not find the scientific communities detailed accounts of the problem or the solutions. You will be able to access the passion and ideas that flow behind the desire to see things improve from where we are today instead of getting worse. At the end of the movie during the credit sequence you are given a few key things you could do to help. You are also given a website www.climatecrisis.net where you can go for more information.

Whatever your political denomination I urge you to see this movie. If only to give public voice to information that has been repressed for so long. In this democratic nation I truly believe in the right of the people to choose their destiny and their own moral truth. And I believe that no amount of information could make me do something that I believed was wrong. The only dangerous information is that which we do not have. Let’s get together to make informed decisions about our future and the future of the Seventh Generation. The impetus is all around us, what action you take…is up to you.

Had a very nice bike ride today, great to see so many people out. Wish I could believe Al Gore's commitment to reducing global warming. Jarid correctly points out; jet travel is extremely wasteful but more then that it reflects an attitude that some rules only apply to you and me. Where is the sacrifice? Isn't being a leader about setting an example?

What does being carbon neutral really mean? Doesn't it mean not adding any new carbon levels or balancing out what your lifestyle expells? What does that really accomplish? I believe the Kyoto treaty which is the standard to combat global warming would require us to return to a pre 1990 emmision levels so being neutral is not going to solve the problem, going CARBON NEGATIVE should be your goal. So if you really believe that global warming is the threat Al Gore says it is, you must completly reduce both your emissions on front end like avoid using jet travel along with long road trips on a regular basis and then of course you must invest in clean air techology.

But before starting one must find out their base line carbon foot print and that is why I ask, DOES ANYONE KNOW AL GORE'S PERSONAL CARBON FOOTPRINT?

I'll share mine with anyone bored enough to look at it.

Thank you,

Walt

Gore does indeed seem willing to destroy the world in order to save it, no?

First a book, carbon neutral? Hah! What would be wrong with an E-book?

Now a movie that he's FLIES around promoting all.the.time. It's not playing in many cities, so people will have to DRIVE to see it. It will be in air conditioned movie theatres powered by coal fired electrcity.

He goes around in SUV's to movie premeires!

AND he's been known to EXHALE! CO2 right there!

---
editor: Haha. You had me until the last line! Good one!

But just to keep the facts straight (even if this is a joke), he actually walked to the movie premiere in Cannes. It's Drudge that reported false information about that..

jump to top spacemonkey says:

There is no greater hope for America than Al Gore running for President in 08.

Pick Russ Feingold or someone similar, and you've got the best chance our country has from recovering form this trainwreck that Bush will be handing him.

Gore\Feingold 08!!!!

jump to top FLAVIUS WORFEUS says:

Everyone forgets that Al Gore WAS the Vice President for EIGHT YEARS! And everyone was buying SUV's in the 90s. Why didn't Al Gore do his Powerpoint then? Why didn't he at least try to raise the fuel standards then? He was the #2 man for a long time.

He didn't do his powerpoint in 2000 because he would really have his own administration to blame. But now, he can blame the Republicans.

I'm a New Yorker - haven't owned a car in 20 years, live in less than 500 sq feet, walk or take public transportation everywhere. I'm vegan and eat low on the food chain. It takes a lot of oil to produce a pound of meat.

editor note: I recommend that you read some of the recent Al Gore interviews. That question was asked numerous times and he answered it.

jump to top Rich says:

i think it was a brilliant movie. i really do. global warming is a real issue. its odd how people think it doesn't exist. it obviously does.
