Instant Survey: Tuning In

In spite of the growing number of eco-programs available on the boob-tube, it is still pretty clear that television commercials and network programming fuel the rabid consumer culture. While these days TreeHugger.tv and other video podcasts make it easier to get your vid fix without subjecting yourself to manipulative ads and unrealistically wealthy/beautiful/maniacal characters - network television still generates the lion's share of household entertainment.

I only check the weather in the morning every other day, and otherwise, our tv exists as a dvd monitor.

I used to watch much more before we dumped our 'super-sized' cable, and we got Bravo, Sundance and IFC. I'm an indie-film and documentary junkie.

If by television, you mean the sindicated channels, it would be zero hours, as I have not cable, nor satelite, nor antenae. But I do have a Playstation 2 which doubles as DVD player, but mostly I edutain myself with my Intel iMac. I put down 1-4 hours.

I put zero hours, but I do watch a couple of DVDs a week, including some pretty bad and commercial Hollywood fare. I buy DVDs as well.

Also, some video stuff from the Web.

No networks or major cable channels, though. When I got broadband, I cut the cable about three years ago and have never looked back. I'll take the Net over Cable any day of the week.

I voted for 1-4, but the only thing I really watch are Canadian news. It's mostly because I enjoy it as relaxation, not because I need it (I already read the newspaper and tons of online sources).

In fact, my TV time is my "passive brain" relaxation time, but I could easily do without..

I'm with you carl, my tv is just for DVD's. I only watch if a tornado may be coming through. It's nice not to be bombarded with advertisements and when you think about how unreal so many shows are - from comedy to drama - no one's life compares. How depressing, no wonder people's expetations are never met. I think people would be much better off not wasting time watching tv.
