FedEx Kinko's To Offer Brighter Recycled Paper
by Justin Thomas, Virginia on 04.13.06

Today FedEx Kinko's announced a nationwide upgrade to a new brighter version of its standard white recycled paper at Office and Print Centers. The upgraded paper which has 30% recycled content, will have an increased brightness rating from 84 to 92, displays sharper text and images. They also offer 100-percent post-consumer recycled paper upon request at no additional cost. This stock is also being upgraded to a 92 brightness rating. No word on whether the paper is chlorine bleached or not. The company uses paper made of 30-percent post-consumer recycled content for standard black-and-white copy and print orders. :: Via: Houston Chronicle

some branches have had this for a while now. Unfortuneately, some branches still have excess old stock. If you go to a kinkos, be mindful of the paper in the machine...even without the paper change, other inconsiderate customers tend to leave odd paper in the trays when they are done.
Also 100% recycled paper, even if it's the same brightness, won't be the exact same color. The 100% recycled paper is usually loaded solely into a "Green Machine", look or ask for it. The 100% recycled stock is not always in stock either.
What would be really nice is if FedEx-Kinkos would buy up carbon credits to match their foot print.
I was pleasantly suprised the other day to discover that they also do business cards on recycled paper, which is also using FSC certified sources as well I noticed.
This is all fine and good, but it depends on the individual store actually buying and using the paper. When I worked at Kinko's (over a decade ago) the machines with the big recycling sign on them were *never* stocked with recycled paper. So basically it was just greenwashing.
If you look on Office Depot's website, you'll find all recycled paper is 30% recycled, and the brightness has been coming up since I started ordering for the office. If you dig deep, you'll find that they have Ampad 100% Post-Consumer paper with 85% brightness. I just bought a ream of it, and it's quite good.
DG,
10 years ago is ancient history. The changes made at kinkos do go a bit further than the FedExy uniforms they now wear. I can personally attest that now...at least at my nearby kinkos...they usually have 100% recycled paper in at least one machine.
user tip: Wherever theres a kinkos, there is usually a decent paper store somewhere within driving distance...which Kinkos will know about and give directions; wherein one can buy most any paper you want. Don't buy strictly ink-jet paper for use at kinkos though...it will destroy the fusers in the copiers, and get the staff very very angry. (^_^);
I work for Kikos currently, we have upgraded alot in the past few years since FedEx came into our lives. We no longer have recycle specific machines, all our machines use recycled paper and their 92% bright. they print perfectly and I have never recieved a complaint about them. We do offer alot of retail paper that is of a brighter quality and we offer alot of our color papers in recycled form
if it's the same brightness, won't be the exact same color. The 100% recycled paper is usually loaded solely into a "Green Machine", look or ask for it. The 100% recycled stock is not always in stock either.
I always try to leave a comment. Sometimes I might go to a blog and it's all advertising and a product I'm not interested in, so I don't say anything, but otherwise I try to leave a comment. If you don't leave comments, how are you ever going to meet people? On my other blog, I've made some wonderful friends because of visits and commenting.
