Business & Politics

brad_pitt_as_achilles.jpgBrad Pitt and Global Green USA (founded by Mikhail Gorbachev) have announced that they are teaming up to sponsor a design competition to provide n opportunity for talented architects, urban planners, designers, ecologists and students to put forward a creative yet practical vision for New Orleans neighborhoods." Brad says: “It is our hope that this competition will generate and uncover new and innovative ideas which will advance the practicalities of responsible architecture, as well as spark a long overdue rebuilding effort for the people of New Orleans, Honoring the traditions of this unique city and the voice of its residents, our goal is to create designs and ideally built projects for neighborhoods which are stable, beautiful, sustainable and affordable. This competition asks the question can this catastrophe be turned into opportunity? Can we create for these neighborhoods and its families something even better than they had before? We encourage anyone with an idea to get involved.” Final details, including jurors, program and brief will be available mid-May. Pre-register at ::Global Green

There's simply no point in rebuilding New Orleans, sustainable or not. In 40 years Greenland will melt and you'll have spent trillions for naught.

Honestly, did you not watch "Dimming the Sun" on PBS last Tuesday, or read the April addition of Time Magazine?

As a resident of New Orleans I take offense to being told that my city is not worth rebuilding.

However, as a recent (unwilling) student participant of the Arch Record "High Density on the High Ground" competition, I'd like to tell Mr. Pitt exactly where his competition can go. Ideas are great, when you've got the cash and don't have to worry about tomorrow. The residents of New Orleans don't have the cash. Fewer competitions and more home-builders and financial assistance for those trying to return, please.

My dear Brenton,
You obviously do not know geography. As a resident of New Orleans I would like to tell you that if Greenland melted, EVERY city that resides on ANY coast will be underwater.

That would include (in the US) New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. Elsewhere: Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, London, Calcutta, Tokyo and Osaka.

I'd like to hear you make those comments when the next disaster hits a major city. Perhaps we should not have rebuilt San Francisco after the earthquake of 1906? After all, another earthquake will hit... Tell that to the people of San Francisco.

Cities in past history have moved to new locations, because of environmental changes. Working with nature, seems more logical than against it.

Why not develop a New Orleans plan that includes permanently flooding "the bowl," creating a lake? This will create lake front property, which has additional appeal and value?

Everywhere else, people want to live in the suburbs. Why fight it here? Develop land higher and further away so people don't have to live from hurricane to hurricane.

Put on your seat belt and open your eyes! The world as we have experienced is changing. It is your choice to sit back and judge or take ACTION... I encourage Pitt and all those who make a stand against the constance distruction that WE have allowed to take place. My hope is that everyone will become more aware of what is happening and to reach out to those that are unable to learn...
To rebuild is to show love! Something that is long over due...

Brad pitt is a very good looking man. But I think that the "tree hugger" part of him, will break the undieing spell of wich many young female actresses and women of the public have been cast under, do to his body and good looks. It would seem as if that may be a bad thing, considering the fact that many of those zombies you call momen and actresses, would most likely get their panties all up in a twist. But I think women civilians should forget about all those hansom and sexy men on television and in the moveis, and focuss much more on politics, voting, contributing to the neighborhood and environment, and making a living... the things that REALLY matter. Thats what I think
