World's Largest Biodiesel Plant Coming to Indiana

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels announced plans to build the world's largest biodiesel plant in his state yesterday. Louis Dreyfus Agriculture Industries LLC plans to build the plant near Claypool, Indiana. The new facility will produce up to 250,000 gallons of biodiesel per day, which adds up to more than 80 million gallons per year. With this facility, two other biodiesel and six ethanol plants currently under construction, Indiana is looking pretty sharp when it comes to biofuel production. Said the Governor, "It’s been a hectic year of dramatic progress in renewable fuels development in our state. If Indiana can do this, think what America can do to work toward energy self-sufficiency. In just one year, we’re growing from one alternative fuels plant to nine, with more to come."

Indiana is the fifth-largest corn state and the fourth-largest soybean state. With the facilities under construction, the state will produce an additional 400 million gallons of ethanol annually and 95 million gallons of biodiesel. Indiana’s goal is to produce a combined 1 billion gallons of ethanol and biodiesel annually.

The new plant will utilize Indiana soybeans, and, upon completion, the Louis Dreyfus facility will be one of the first biodiesel production plants to be fully integrated with a soybean processing plant. About 260,000 metric tons of soybean oil from the plant will be used each year for biodiesel production. In addition, 1 million tons of protein-rich soybean meal produced each year will be used by the livestock and poultry industry. Incidentally, Louis Dreyfus Agriculture Industries is run by the father of TreeHugger eco-celeb Julia Louis Dreyfus; it's always good to see green genes in action. ::Indiana Governor's Press Release via ::Green Car Congress

I am doing some work on the maximum biodiesel potential in the US. Can anyone suggest a few good sites?

Beyond biodiesel king Willie Nelson's of course! :)

as a hoosier I've been following this news very intently. Indiana has been moving towards renewable fuels... with laws that require biofuels in municipal vehicles, massive pushes for ethanol...

It's a great way to revitalize our agricultural economy. Up in Whiting, the BP refinery (third largest in the US) is beginning to reclaim millions of barrels that have seeped into the water table over the past 100 years.

we still have trouble with brownfields and superfund sites... but I have great confidence in the steel, oil and other industries in NW indiana... they've begun to show a commitment to this areas communities and environment that for years has been absent.

Indiana, I hope, will prove to be a major player in future green industrial practices.

What does this = in terms of barrels of oil per day?

A friend and myself were looking into using bio-D as a supplement fuel for our trucks. Only using a personal amount for private use to save costs. We found that a production rate of $1.00 per gallon was what we were looking at, and found that most vehicles couldn't use the b80 mixture per the reports (below) vehicle manufacturer specs. VMS shows only a use of (b20), I think they want you to buy more gas. Why else do we have farms and heavy trucks running on 95% bio-d? We found that a slight modification to the vehicle using a start/shutdown technique with Petro diesel, then switching to a tank of converted bio-d (b80+) might allow for lower costs across the bottom line. This technique would flush the lines with PD and will allow for higher bio-d use while driving.
Please let me know if anyone has heard of a concrete reason on why CONVERTED bio-d at a higher mixture rate (b80-90) cannot be used if startup/shutdown flushing techniques are used.
We are planning on how we might fully implement our plans, and see what happens.
Some resources we found were these:
http://www.methanol.org/pdfFrame.cfm?pdf=BiodieselPrimer2007.pdf
http://www.biodiesel.org/pdf_files/fuelfactsheets/ema_svo.pdf
http://www.biodiesel.org/resources/reportsdatabase/reports/gen/20060401_GEN-370.pdf

One report shows that there are detrimental effects to using non-converted bio-D, duh, you end up with 10% sludge in your injectors and pistons.
We are looking for answers to our other questions.

We're looking forward to see what indiana has to offer...
