Strange Waters #3: O18 Water from Fruit
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 03. 1.06
Lets get this straight. "Nature's secret to keep fruit fresh is the H2O18 water molecule - a natural water molecule stored in fresh juice. Scientific research demonstrates that water in fruit will keep your body hydrated for longer than any other water! This is a unique feature of water from fruit." So this special water molecule is "pressure chilled" out of Australian fruit and is the most naturally purefied water on earth. Good for your skin too: "The water in the mist spray cans is natural and has a pH to complement your skin. Due to its unique fruit source O18 helps to moisturise and enhance skin quality." ::O18 Water via (where else?) ::Strange New Products

Sounds to me like a marketing bureau idea for the by-products of Concentrated Orange Juice manufacturing...
What claptrap!
A bit of research shows that H2O18 is heavy oxygen water. ie. water containing the oxygen-18 isotope as opposed to the oxygen-16. 99.76% of all oxygen is O-16. 0.20% is O-18. (see physics reference http://hypertextbook.com/physics/modern/isotopes/).
What does practical effect does this have? Well the difference in isotopic weight leads to a very slight difference in evaporation rates as the oceans. This effect is useful in measuring past temperatures from the ratios found in ice cores. We are talking 700 parts per million per degree Celsius here.
The differences are however extremely small and a company pretending to ship water that somehow hydrates better (because it is richer in H2018 because that has been concentrated by fruit - eh?) belongs to the ranks of the very worst sort of snake-oil salesmen (IMHO).
Worse still are people who pay to have this shipped around the planet (from Australia). They are failing to grasp the concept of sustainability in a very deep and eco-system damaging way.
Please, before posting promos for wonder substances which come packaged in pseudo-science, run them past someone with a bit of scientific knowledge.
Regards Brian
Oh good lord, I'm so ashamed!
an aussie company doing that.
The only two molecularly different waters I know of are heave water and regular water.
Water is kept in fruit because of the cells that create the flesh and the even denser cells that make the skin, all are filled with regular H2o.
The skin performs osmosis where by the water in the skin cells move into areas where there is less water, it just happens very slowly because the fruit is stressed and attempts to reduce water transfer (osmosis) as much as possible.
it also helps to have the sugers and so forth.
I'm going to say it is just a marketing ploy!!!
Thank you, Brian and Ben. I'm glad there are folks out there who know the science!
If you want your water from fruit, just eat more fruit. Don't have water extracted from fruit and hauled over from Austraila with packaging and fuel waste. How un-green is that?!
By the way, there is a subscript tag in HTML, if I'm not mistaken.
It should have been identified as H2O(18). Calling it H2O18 makes it look as if there are 18 oxygen atoms bonded to 2 hydrogens. I was wondering what this was about until I read Ben's post.

Its a shame the "scientists" who posted the negative comments re this innovation purport to be just that, as they have totally assumed incorrectly what this is about. Not only on the oxygen 18 part but also on the green/environmental issue.
Go and have a look at how Fruit juices are authenticated as fresh squeezed juice and you might get it. It has nothing to do with ice core temperature measurement or cell density of the fruit skin.
It is a very simple and logical process of nature that is there for all to see as to why they can make the hydration claim, not marketing snake oil salesman ploys.
Please Brian and Ben if you are to comment do your homework first.
