Restaurant of the Week: Native Foods, Southern California
by Kara DiCamillo, Newport, Rhode Island on 03.30.06
With four locations in Southern California, Native Foods is an organic, vegan restaurant. We’re told from our tipster, Jon, that they have delicious food and that it’s one restaurant you don’t want to miss. Native Foods has incorporated their experiences in food service, travel and healthy cooking to offer foods with ethnic fusion of bright colors, rich flavors, and delicious textures. The menu is very unique in that they have incorporated alternative tasty textures, which include tempeh and seitan. One other cool thing about Native Foods is that not only is everything 100% vegan, but they even use a lot of green goods, like cutlery and corn plastic mugs. On their website you'll find yummy recipes in addition to a cookbook written by the owner, Tanya Petrovna. She also holds cooking classes at the different restaurants in case you want to learn a few tips from her. ::Native Foods

There's one in OC and, as a vegan there, I ate at Native Foods often. However, after initially falling in love with the place, i noticed some things: the foods there aren't really native to socal, the design of the roof (shown in the picture) for easy cooling (complete with a huge fan) doesn't really work because the top hole is capped, and the food can sometimes be better than others. and NEVER order the "cheese" stuff they put on pizzas - it's some nasty creamy paste. now i live in northern cali, and the bay area has much better options.
There's a Native Foods in Westwood (near UCLA) and it's AWESOME. If you like barbecue, try either the Mad Cowboy bowl or the BBQ "Chicken" Pizza. Yum!
I love native foods. The food is always fresh and well combined. I eat at both the Westwood and Costa Mesa restaurants and find the freshness consistent with both restaurants. My daughter even had them cater her wedding. The food was wonderful as usual. The CAKE was better than awesome!
