Organic Kraft Dinner Coming Soon?
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 03.11.06
The ultimate Canadian comfort food is Kraft Dinner- called Macaroni and Cheese in the States but according to Wikipedia there is not enough real cheese in it to use the word legally in Canada- luridly orange, it is hardly health food. Now Kraft Foods is going organic- "I do think it's a freight train that's going to pick up steam," David Johnson, president of Kraft's North American Commercial group, said at the Reuters Food Summit in Chicago. "I don't think it's a fad." With Wal-Mart, Sara Lee and Unilever jumping on the organic trend- how mainstream can you get? ::Reuters via ::Sustainable Table

A couple of years ago, Kraft Foods ordered pounds of hemp protein powder for their testing kitchen in White Plains, NY... What is the world coming to?
it is hardly health food
Unfortunately, going organic won't make mac'n'cheese healthy. Annie's brand mac'n'cheese-like products are the darling of natural food lovers everywhere, and they do taste great, but have a look at the nutrition facts still. It's a fat, cholesterol, sodium, and carb-loaded meal which no in the world one eats in the recommended serving size.
Going organic with mac'n'cheese is a step in the right direction, but I fear some might load up on the cheesy mess thinking, "hey, it can't be bad for me now that it's organic."
Try Roads End Shells and Chreese, it's completely vegan and much better for you. Plus they are not owned by Phillip Morris, which makes the case a done deal for me.
An organic label doesn't make this any more worthy of picking up for purchase, But I imagine this is the choir we're preaching this to.
And heck- add a bunch of a broccoli or beets to your mac-n-cheese!
"add a bunch of a broccoli or beets to your mac-n-cheese!"
I second the motion. I don't eat much mac-and-cheese myself, but 2-3 cups of steamed broccoli is a nice addition to most pasta recipes (whole wheat, of course). Yummy!
i wonder if they will use organic cheese.
what really dissapoints me about a lot of health food brands like amy's is that their food products are organic except for the cheese. what's the point of making an organic pizza without organic cheese?
Regarding Annie's pasta: according to their ingredient listing on the website the organic variety does contain organic cheese.
I tried this new Organic & Natural Mac and Cheese called "Chef & O" -- It was really good, way better than annies homegrown and looks better on the box. My daughter won't eat annies now, she only wants Chef & O! I found the website www.chefando.com
It's really frustrating when these companies can call their mac & cheese organic when they still contain preservatives and unatural color enhancers; for example...President's Choice (Real Canadian Superstore here in Western Canada)'organic'mac and cheese. Who do they think they are fooling? I only hope Kraft figures it out right!!
