New Future for Solar Panels?
by Mairi Beautyman, Berlin, Germany on 03.15.06

Pugh + Scarpa is out to revolutionize solar home technology. The architecture firm, who we have also recognized for an innovative prefab, has a new take on the solar canopy. The “Solar Umbrella" is based on a new type of solar skin. According to the American Institute of Architects (AIA), who just bestowed the firm with a 2006 Innovation in Housing Design award for the project, the skin absorbs sunlight rather than deflecting it, and provides thermal protection in climates with intense exposures. Reportedly aesthetically pleasing (alas, it doesn’t glow at night) and barely visible, the skin provides a home with 100 percent of its electricity and incorporates passive and active solar design strategies—which effectively render the residence 100 percent energy neutral. ::Pugh + Scarpa ::AIA

Ugh, what a terrible website. I really don't understand why all these cool and creative firms feel the need to design their entire website in flash. It's so annoying. I can't even find this concept on their website.
Having said that, I'd like to learn more about this; it sounds neat. They say it can supply the energy needs of the entire household...I wonder how that varies depending on location, energy use, size of household, etc.
Completely agree with Commenter Number 1. I went to find out more info about this great concept but was halted in my tracks by their ergonomically hindered website.
When I see a firm with a website like this it makes think that their architecture will be all style and no substance and that they won't know how to build a building that really works.
I agree with the other two commenters. The Pugh + Scarpa web site stinks.
I suppose they are too busy to update their website. It's the only way I can explain the dud at their url.
See the link Below for more info:

We already know that their website stinks but I feel compelled by my 5 frustrating and unproductive minutes to agree with those above.
Ok I found the page on the flash site..
HOW TO FIND THE PAGE.
1. Go to http://www.pugh-scarpa.com
2. Click 'PORTFOLIOS' (bottom right corner)
3. Select 'Residential' from the list
4. Its the second project from the left (in the top row), called 'Solar Umbrella' when you mouse over it.
As easy as that (not) ;)
