How many times have you seen a broken or flickering neon light? Durability is not one neon's strengths. But now a new product, LED-Flex, has been introduced as a substitute for neon. The producer, Mule Lighting, has managed to make the flexible LEDs have the appearance and brightness of neon. The biggest advantage of this product is the efficiency level — it reduces energy costs by about 70%. It also has all the advantages of LEDs — durability, a cool operating temperatures and longevity. :: Mule Lighting via Transmaterial

Has anyone looked at the manufacturing side of LEDs? They save a lot of energy and are very durable, but they're made from semiconductors, the production of which I think is pretty polluting. Is all this gallium nitride just going to poison us down the road? Anyone? Bueller?

Has anyone ever tried out the regular style bulbs from Mule that screw into a typical socket? I would like to see some lumen ratings on the website, as well as prices. Even if I needed ten of these to light a room, the energy savings would be enormous.

jump to top Brian says:

While things with names like Gallium nitride sound like they might be poison this one doesn't seem too bad. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallium_nitride has the information on it with a side bar of materals information.

Rosebrand, a theatre supply company also sells these. I really like the fact you can bend and twist the lights, without having to deal with glass.

Yes its true. Rosebrand do this also

Go to http://ledneonlight.com and you will find better pricing for this product. We even sell color changing flex neon using RGB led technology.

Don't be MisLED by the LED People that their products are more effecient than neon in cost, power and lighting.

Here is a good article with straight facts

editor note: Most of what I read about LED doesn't say that they are more efficient or cost-effective NOW, but they certainly have the potential to be in the future.

jump to top Erik W says:

LEDNeon-Flex is becoming more energy efficient 0.58 Watts/Foot that's almost 95% more energy efficient then Neon.

Check the specs on all the LEDNeonFlex products at LEDNeonFlex.com

jump to top Derek says:

We have both manufacturer's of both LED's and Neon. I'm sure we'd love to hear your facts and figures on lighting for say a simple configuration of 100' Lumens and primary power consumption.

95% more "energy" efficient is very interesting.

jump to top Erik says:

Sorry, mistake in the literature I was getting this information from. The lowest is 0.96 Watts/Foot for Yellow and Orange LEDNeon-Flex. The light output for Yellow is 9.2 Lm/Ft and 16.2 Lm/Ft for orange.

Watts per foot tells you nothing without information on light output. Find out how much power is needed to produce equivalent light and you will see that virtually all neon colors are several times more energy efficient than LEDs.

The figure you need to compare is LUMENS PER WATT.

Flexible LED manufacturers say they are brighter, more efficient, etc. Let's see the real figures.
