Since this is the first spring in my new house, I'm going to be building my very own Square Foot Garden out of recycled palettes. I've already got the seeds started in some peat.

Not only do we grow veggies and fruits in our backyard garden, we also grow our own eggs! Well, not us exactly, but our urban chicken flock of 3 dutifully laying hens.

Not much so far.. Some spices and tomatoes, but I plan to expand that next summer.

We get most of our vegetables from a local organic farm, but that's not as satisfying as growing your own...

I started with a few plants on the balcony, then in pots in the backyard at our new apartment, now (after 2+ years on the waitlist!) I got my plot in a community gargen, Ocean View Farms. I planted lettuce-y stuff, cabbage, peas, radishes and flowers so far, but the next month will be the big start! I am VERY happy.

Not a raw foodist but sprouts are the best...only need a jar and a little water. Can sprout on the cheap with regular bulk soybeans/legumes too. Many will sprout in total darkness. Now I have yet to see an article/comment on TH but I'm curious if anyone grows insects for their own food?

Icelander: please please please please please please don't use peat. It comes from a very rare and fragile ecosystem. There's plenty of alternatives out there - may I suggest some form of compost (that isn't mixed with peat). Good luck with your new garden though - I'm sure you'll get a lot of enjoyment from growing your own stuff! :-)

We have an allotment and grow most of the vegetables we eat. Fruit is a bit harder to grow enough of, and trees take quite a while to mature, but we are making progress with each passing season.
