It used to be that when it came to denim, cotton was unbeatable for comfort and durability, and though cotton is still the material of choice for many, there are lots of alternatives for the green jeanswearer. Here are our favorite jeans of all kinds.

1) Fan of cotton can't go wrong with Kuyichi or Loomstate.
2) Once all your old faves are all worn out, Jeansmakers will stitch a custom pair using your old ones.
3) Help hemp get hip with a pair from iPath or Patagonia.
4) These sugar cane jeans are a sweet alternative to the denim norm.

And for those of us who can't spend $80 on one freaking pair of jeans, there's always Goodwill or the Salvation Army.

Why must green products always be so expensive?

It might not be true in all cases, but sustainably produced goods often reflect the true price of a product -- cotton is an incredibly energy-intensive crop to grow, and growing it organically takes more time and effort. Also, fair prices are paid to farmers, and a living wage is paid to those making the jeans.

However, I whole-heartedly agree that the best place to find a great, cheap pair of recycled jeans is your local thrift shop -- which usually supports community development projects, an added bonus!
