Ticket Hummers for being Big and Ugly
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 02. 3.06
If you drive a Hummer in Toronto stay home today- volunteers are joining Montreal's Action Terroriste Socialement Acceptable (we liked their last Toronto gig) and issuing 1200 statements of offence. These statements target "oversize vehicles and the excessive fuel consumption asociated with them, excessive engine idling, remote engine starters and poorly maintained vehicles." Written in triplicate, they will be exhibited at YYZ Gallery. Note to volunteers: watch out for drivers eating beef patties. ::SpacingWire

There are genuine legal reasons to ticket Hummers, not merely for bad taste.
The curb weight of a 2005 Hummer is 6400 pounds. In most municipalities, weight limits exist on residential roads and parkways, usually at 3 tons or 2 1/2 tons. That means it is actually illegal to drive a Hummer on these roads.
I, for one, would love to see the police start enforcing these rules in my neighborhood.
This is more likely to anger than get people to switch there cars... I can hardly imagine, "Oh Honey, I just got a ticket for my car being big, ugly and using too much gas." , "Let's go buy a hybrid."
I bet this will cause backlash and not reach the goals they were trying to reach.
So, who is ticketing them for littering by putting 1200 pieces of paper on cars owned by people who don't give a rat's ass what "terroriste socialements" think of their car. I, for one, always throw things that get stuck under my windshield wiper blades on the ground. If someone gets mad that their parking lot has litter all over it, they know exactly who to call to pick up the mess. "But it's freedom of speech," they cry. Well, what about freedom of choice? And what about practicing what you preach? Quit littering up Canada. Prove your point by example. Shame on you.
How many trees were killed to make those tickets?
Yeah peoples, if people want to buy and drive those beasts, let em.
And ya know what? Judging on so little data is really irresponsible.
I drive a 1993 Jeep Wrangler. Not really the greenest choice around. But I drive it like, 4 or 5 times a month. I ride the train, my bike, and walk until my freakin' feet hurt.
So if I found someone ticketing my Jeep - I'd have some choice words for them which might include "shove it up your a**"
And hey, if you are going to ticket SUVs, then you have to ticket gigantic sedans, and sports cars. Nobody ever hauled 8 people or hauled lumber in a Corvette, but you can be sure people do it in Suburbans.
I suppose it's nicer than dogshit on the door handle.
anyway, this is violating the property rights of SUV owners.
if you do this please also add in brochure or somehting for TerraPass. and not bother those who do subscribe to TerraPass. thanks.
