Maybe if electricity wasn't considered part of our rent my vote would change, but presently, it's just impressive that they recycle here.
i pushed hard for recycling in my old office - they gave in and started recycling paper only. in my new office - nothing gets recycled. looks like i'm out for a challenge again.
Yes, but only because I MAKE IT A PRIORITY. Since my arrival where I work, I have instituted a recycling program to include plastic 1&2, cans, white paper, and cardboard. I've also made bins more accessible around the office.
I'd like to work on our power consumption, but it's a little hard when our power bill is bundled into our rent (no one cares because saving doesn't effect our bottom line). I do my best to shut as much down/off before I leave each day.
I work for a mid-sized (computer) systems integrator. We have tons of cardboard waste, a fair amount of steel waste, and waste copper.
We recycle the cardboard because it's convenient, and the copper because they actually pay a fair amount for it. We don't recycle steel or glass because the city won't pick it up from us (despite that the same company will take it from my home bin). Did I mention that Seattle won't pick up our trash if it has recyclables in it?
We'll eventually have a plan to take components back from customers for recycling when the machine is out of date or dead, but only because it's now required by law.
I still answered no. Not because we aren't green, but because we wouldn't be it we didn't have to be.
At my place of work we have a Green Team made up of a number of volunteers representing each part of the business. The Team is also supported by the business and receives fundings for its initiatives. The latest initiative is to encourage people to save elctricity by various methods such as switching off your monitor when not in use. We aim to have a new initiative ready every 6 to 8 weeks. I believe we're switching to a green electricity supplier in March.
My company makes a big deal about caring for the environment. And I'm sure on many levels they're a success in their endeavors to be environmentally responsible. But they fell a bit short when they put up signs encouraging people to cut down on disposable coffee cup waste by bringing their own mugs to work...and then providing *styrofoam* cups for those who didn't.
The very idea of my workplace is not very green. I clean in a factory that makes salads, salad dressings, chops up vegetables etc. The real problem (or I find it a bit silly) is that after the vegetables come from abroad to Helsinki (capital of Finland) they bring them to Vesanto (small village 370 km away from Helsinki). After the chopping and packing (with loads of plastic) they take them back to Helsinki to shops and hospitals etc. So those vegetables travel back and forth 800-1000 km. Its nice that we have jobs here as well but with my logic, they should do their salads in Helsinki. And dont get me started on those packing machines that spray several kilos of salad to the floors every single day...
I work for the US Army. We have an excellent environmental sustainability program. From recycling batteries to protection of threatened and endangered species, our program is remarkably extensive.
My company is known for its commitment to the environment. In fact, they just hired me to be the regional "green" consultant. It's my job to make every location as green as possible. I hope to go work for all the big companies in my career and convert them all to more green business practices.
