TreeHugging can be a lonely enterprise, which is why good eco-writing has always been important to the environmental movement - passionate, intimate writing provides inspiration that can't be found in a call to action or a news report. These are just some of the authors that have helped lead the way to a greener future, please comment with suggestions of others.

What about John McPhee? "Encounters with the Archdruid" is great.
I quite like Paul Hawken and David Suzuki. Good non-fiction stuff.
You read my mind, MGR. Growing up here in Canada, Suzuki has been the most consistent, constant influence and source for inspiration.
Definitely need to include John McPhee, he's written about two dozen exemplary books on the environment. And Bernd Heinrich too, who wrote "Ravens in Winter", "Mind of the Raven" and numerous other books on the natural world.
Wendell Berry? And I second the John McPhee vote.
MICHAEL POLLAN!!!
I downloaded tons of his essays and they are great! He often ties together the social with the environmental.
Start with 'power steer' and 'when corn was king'.
I second Wendell Berry and a big up to Paul Hawken and David Suzuki for sure. Also Bill McKibben, Gary Nabhan, Winona Laduke, Thomas Berry, Brian Swimme, Bill Plotkin, Matthew Fox, Lestern Brown, Derrick Jensen, David Korten, Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin, E.F. Shumacher, Wes Jackson, Terry Tempest Williams, William McDonough, Herman Daly, Janine Benyus, Vandana Shiva, and Amory Lovins
Dr Suess
How about Frank Herbert?
