An Inconvenient Truth - Al Gore Is A Hit With Enviro-Film At Sundance
by Leonora Oppenheim, London, UK on 02. 7.06

Apart from serving as Vice-President, running for President, writing books, setting up TV stations and founding an ethical investment company, the man who never quite made it into the oval office has spent the best part of the last twenty years fighting the good environmental fight. Many of you who are politically, as well as environmentally aware, will already know this. Those who only remember him as the Commander–In–Chief who never was are soon to discover that Gore has a new calling; one much more important than being The President of The United States. An Inconvenient Truth is a new film documentary about Gore’s environmental crusade around the world to raise awareness on Global Warming. Geraldine Bell writes in last Sunday’s Observer newspaper that Gore has been giving ‘a passionate, expertly documented multimedia presentation on global warming, in halls and on campuses, mainly to invited audiences. This campaign is personal and impassioned. He has given the presentation, by his own admission, more than 1,000 times.’
While Gore’s environmental message may have reached many people already by his own legwork, with this film it is set to reach many millions more. Bell writes: ‘An Inconvenient Truth sold out at Sundance and received standing ovations. The Q&As with Gore following the screenings were packed. “The reception he got was extraordinary,” says the film's producer, Lawrence Bender (Pulp Fiction, Good Will Hunting, Kill Bill). “He was a phenomenon at Sundance. He seemed larger than life.”
It is fascinating how the power of the film and celebrity world can make people sit up and take notice. While mostly the focus is on the superficial and mundane (will Brad marry Angelina – yawn!) it is exciting that sometimes it can make people focus on really important messages. In this instance it appears that the film industry will do for Al Gore what nearly winning the presidency never did – make people listen. Bell goes onto write in the Observer: ‘Marty Peretz, editor-in-chief of The New Republic, has known Gore since Gore was his student at Harvard 41 years ago and insists that this is the authentic person. “He has always been funny, charming and self-possessed. It seems that people are starting to understand that now. They are also recognising his honesty, his intellect and his bravery. When he started talking about the environment 20 years ago people thought he was something of a crank. It was a courageous thing to do. He thinks very far ahead of the game.'”
So it could be that with An Inconvenient Truth Al Gore’s time has come. We hope that this campaign will have more success and greater impact than his last – with clear winning results. Read the full Observer article by Geraldine Bell here.

Al for the next USEPA Administrator. It's destiny. THe world needs the US to be it's climate leader and he has a vision and understanding.
I work in the film biz and I have been hearing that there is a "bidding war" over this film, going on between several smaller indie distributors. So hopefully it will be released in theaters some time in the coming year, here in the US.
AL GORE is too good to be true. We need this man to be our PRESIDENT. The world needs AL GORE.
Al Gore without a doubt has my vote if he runs in 2008 because he is a selfless individual and I believe him to be trustworthy beyond question

Al Gore is a dangerous man as evidence by the fear mongering message of this movie. Give it a rest!
I voted for Al Gore in 2000, and he will have my vote again in 2008. The Clinton Gore years were the best in the nation's history. A far cry from the sad state of the nation today.
RE the post by "your all crazy"...lay off the kool-aid buddy. You think fear mongering is an Al Gore tactic? The entire reichwing operates on a divisive, fear driven agenda. He intentionally used that "scariest movie you'll ever see" as a last resort to attract those sad americans who only respond to messages fed by fear and not hope. Because yes, the situation is that serious.

I do believe the Earth is warming, but to think that the world has been around for millions of years and that humans could ruin it in less than 150. Give me a break. The Earth is going to do, what is it going to do, wether we are on it or not. Wow that felt good!
Wow Nick, I'm so glad you have blessed us with your wisdom! The fact the earth has been around so long, and us humans for just a fraction of that time MUST mean we are not capable of altering it's course. Geez, the insight! You do realize that the ice shelfs are melting at a rate not seen in the history of recorded weather don't you? You do realize that we can't tie a rope around the ice sheets and once they melt it will only further contribute to increasing warming trends at the poles don't you? And you do realize all of this is because of the blanket of CO2 we HUMANS have placed in our one and only atmosphere, DONT YOU? Next time think before you speak. It's complacent people like you that are the problem in this society.
Look Al Gore is an alarmist, simple as that, not an environmentalist. What did he do while he was the VP. I didn't see him driving a hybrid, or meeting with the car companies to convince them to improve mpg and to reduce emissions, etc.
Actually, Gore has been an environmentalist for 30 years and he has done quite a bit, maybe you just didn't know about it.
The reason why he didn't talk about the environment in the 2000 presidential was because his advisors told him not to, and he now recognizes that it was probably a mistake.
Even in 1992 Bush senior was calling Gore "the ozone man" and he's one of the people that helped the US sign Kyoto (though it never fulled passed in part because of the republican congress even before Bush II was elected).

Hi there,
Been a lot of stuff going on about 'Global Warming' and, yes it's true. However it is no excuse to get an idea and run off the edge of the earth with it. I haven't saw the movie yet so I will not voice an opinion on it. I have been surfing about NASA web sites and found that Mars explorer (Odyssey) has indicated that Mars is slowly creeping out of an ice age and warming up, albeit very slowly. Pluto has indicated that it is also warming up. I find it difficult swallow the idea that driving an SUV on earth can effect the temperature on Pluto.
Do you suppose it is possible that the sun may be changing a bit? It is, after all, about fourteen million times larger than earth and has enough gravitational power to hold at least nine planets in orbit. If it hiccups, even in the slightest, then rest assured we will feel it here. Also we have an abundance of volcanos (some dramatic under water ones) spewing forth tremendous heat and gasses. Along with earthquakes under water allowing cool water to be heated as it is exposed to molten rock.
Granted, we may be contributing to it a bit but there is a viable chance that this is an unstoppable natural chain of events. We also have nearly seven billion people alive on earth breathing out carbon dioxide, twenty four-seven. Shouldn't that be a considered factor also? (not to mention all the animals) Also with an excess of six billion people running about on earth at any given time could be considered excessive. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that earth will not tolerate such an onslaught. Every living thing relies on earth for it's support and when it becomes excessive nature will balance itself, it always has and it always will. We have neglected our space programs to colonize other places and hopefully thin our population and bring support from other worlds to ease the strain on earth, now we will pay the price. There is no escape, no one in china or greater Europe is going to listen us and our chicken little mentality and knee jerk reactionism.
-enjoy the ride-
Always

Sometimes it's hard to know what to believe. The article at the following URL makes an interesting read.

It's unfortunate that the people who need to see this movie may not seek it out and actually do so.
To that end, there is now a site, a framework for a community, http://sharethetruth.us, where anyone can arrive and be paid to see the movie. It is also a forum where those inspired by the film can share it with those they love or, perhaps sending a greater message, with complete strangers.
I believe that for real change to occur, top-down political will is required, and for that to happen there need to be large changes in the public tide of awareness.
The site is not for profit in any way. Please help send the message out that people now have a way of seeing, getting to, even eating popcorn during, the movie for FREE.
Thank you.

To the few climate sceptics reading this site:
I'm writing from Paris, where the film was showed and ovationed at the ministry of environment (and in France we have for now a conservative, pro economy, government!).
Now, you may or may not like the messenger, Al Gore, or the French, but please listen to the MESSAGE and to what science says. Go see the movie, and think for yourself.
I send you flowers. I take you dinner. I personally swim to America to hug you. Anything. But please go and see this movie.
America is embarked on a long, common journey with the rest of the world. Please respect your fellow passengers!
And believe me, the return on investment is *huge*...
Anyway what is the economy worth if you can't *enjoy* the money you earn ?
Did you know that Greenland's ice cap is melting much faster than you think it can, to the big satisfaction of the oil industry who -now that the ice is freeing the ground- can explore the huge oil reserves of the Disko bay? Look it up...
Is it possible that we are just sawing the branch we are sitting on, just because we can earn money from it?
While you are reading this, ice caps and glaciers all around the world are melting at a rate so high that scientists cannot explain it.
And hey, to those who think the earth is so big and can easily take it, here's a riddle :
Imagine there is a 25 000 miles long rope laced all around the earth at sea level.
How much do you think you should make that rope longer to have it running one foot above sea level all around the world? Any Idea? The answer: only 6 feet... With a 6 feet longer rope, you raise it 1 foot all around the planet.
Now think about the oceans... and connect the dots.
With respect,
Jean-Pierre
